Question from Shruti:  Hi, Rick. I hope you’re doing well.

I have a Dell XPS 13 9370 Ultrabook. Everything was fine until this morning when my screen just turned grey-ish black.

I had dropped my laptop and slightly cracked the top right edge of the screen along with one of the hinges a few months back but everything seemed to still be working fine.

I don’t know why this suddenly happened.

I have important data on this machine so I’d like to know if there is any way to retrieve the data without fixing the screen?  [Read more…]

Question from Shane: I recently found your blog, and I love it. Great job!

I took your advice and replaced the hard drive in my laptop with an SSD to make it run faster.

Everything seems to be working ok and the speed increase is incredible, but I’m worried that I might have possibly damaged something while I was swapping out the drives.  [Read more…]

What to do if your computer’s hard drive starts making strange noises

Question from Stephen:  I’ve been wanting to buy an SSD for my laptop for a while now, but the high prices for SSDs have been holding me back.

I was checking on eBay last night and saw where a guy is selling used Crucial MX500 512GB 2.5″ SSDs for just $40 each.

What’s your opinion on used solid state drives? Do you think I should buy one?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is an NVMe drive really faster than a SATA III SSD?

Posted on December 27, 2022

Question from Norbert:  I just ordered an Intel i7 CPU and ASUS gaming motherboard combo that supports both M.2 NVMe and 2.5″ SATA III drives.

Now I’m trying to decide on an SSD for it.

I know NVMe drives are a lot faster than SATA III drives, but I recently read that using an NVMe drive in a gaming PC will actually slow it down because it’ll clog up the PCI lanes, so it’s better to use a SATA III drive.

Is there any truth to that? [Read more…]
