I’m often asked if it’s still possible to buy a new PC that comes with Windows 7, and the answer is yes. A perfect example is the excellent Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 20B20011US (#ad) laptop.

Actually, this laptop gives you a choice between two operating systems: Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

It comes with Windows 7 Pro pre-installed, but it also comes with a Windows 8 installation DVD and license. You can always replace Windows 7 with Windows 8 at no additional charge, then update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 for free.

But the flexibility you get in terms of the operating system isn’t the only great thing about this machine. The hardware is quite capable (and expandable) as well. In a nutshell, this is what you get:  [Read more…]

Review: LG gram 15Z960 i7 15.6″ Laptop

Posted on April 11, 2016

lg-gram-15z960-laptopIn my humble opinion, a modern laptop should be blazing fast and have a large screen, yet be comfortably light and compact.

The computer manufacturers are getting better at designing machines that meet this goal, and whenever I see one that looks promising I’m always eager to spend some time checking it out.

I recently had the opportunity to put the new LG gram 15Z960 i7 15.6″ laptop through its paces, and while it isn’t perfect (does a “perfect” laptop even exist?), I found it to be a very good machine that easily meets the fast CPU/large screen/lightweight/compact criteria mentioned above.  [Read more…]

Review: ASUS Transformer Book T100HA-C4-GR 10.1″ Detachable 2-in-1 Touchscreen Laptop/Tablet

Posted on November 6, 2015

asus-transformer-book-t100ha-c4-grTablet PCs are flying off the shelves these days, and for good reason. Even a budget tablet offers much of the functionality of a full-blown PC along with the awesome convenience of a mobile device.

That being said, many of the best-selling tablets run the Android operating system, and that’s fine if all you need to do with your tablet is use the Internet and play games.

But if you want to perform real computing tasks, you’re going to need something more.

I recently had an opportunity to check out the ASUS Transformer Book T100HA-C4-GR, a nifty tablet from ASUS that doubles as a laptop. It includes all of the following:  [Read more…]

Review: ASUS 15.6″ Intel Dual Core Celeron 2.16 Ghz Laptop

The low-cost Windows laptops just keep on coming, and in my opinion that’s a great thing for all the consumers who want to buy a full-blown Windows laptop without spending a ton of cash.

I believe the ASUS 15.6″ Intel Dual Core Celeron 2.16 Ghz Laptop (#ad) is a good choice for anyone who doesn’t plan to edit video or do any hardcore Photoshop work.

This machine won’t win any awards for blazing speed and it doesn’t come with a ton of storage options, but it does an outstanding job at most any web-based task such as checking email, watching Youtube videos, surfing the Internet, and using Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites.

Here is a quick run-down of the specs:  [Read more…]

Not all that long ago you basically had a simple choice to make when it came time to buy a new computer: Desktop PC or Laptop?

Well, these days things are a bit more complicated because we now have tablet PCs thrown into the mix.

Of course if you’re shopping for a desktop PC your choice is easy. Simply choose the brand and model that has all the features you need, then buy it.

But if you prefer something that you can take along with you, you’ll need to decide whether you want to stay with a traditional laptop or try your luck with a tablet. But what if you could have both, in one device?  [Read more…]
