If your laptop’s battery dies faster than it should, check your web browser!

Posted on July 17, 2014

chrome-browser-logoIt has recently come to light that Google’s Chrome web browser (which I LOVE by the way) is a battery hog when used on a laptop, and this is something that I had preciously been totally unaware of.

I hadn’t noticed it because I do the vast majority of my work on a desktop PC, but after checking it out by running tests with my laptop, I can tell you that it is indeed true.

Apparently the culprit is something called the “System Clock Tick Rate”. In simplified terms, this is the rate at which the system “wakes up” a sleeping CPU to check to see if anything is going on that needs to be taken care of.  [Read more…]

Posted on June 25, 2014

chrome-browser-logoQuestion from Jules P:  Hi Rick. I stopped using Internet Explorer and switched to Firefox a couple of years ago because IE was crashing all the time. I like Firefox, but after trying Google Chrome I noticed that it loads the pages I visit a lot faster than Firefox.

My question is now that I’ve started using Chrome, how can I transfer my bookmarks and stored passwords from Firefox into Chrome?

Rick’s answer:  Chrome is a great browser for sure Jules, and I’ve used it as my primary browser for some time now. It’s easy to import your bookmarks, stored passwords and other settings from Firefox into Chrome. Here’s how:  [Read more…]

chrome-os-logoHave you ever noticed the little arrows at the top and bottom of your web browser’s vertical scroll bar? Clicking and holding one of those arrows will cause the current web page to scroll up or down, but if you don’t use them you might not even realize they are there.

But if you do use the scroll arrows, you’d probably feel lost without them.

Well guess what? If you update Google Chrome to version 32 you’ll discover that the scroll arrows have been removed.  [Read more…]

Preview websites and thumbnail photos before you click with SwiftPreview

Posted on June 8, 2013

swift-preview-logoHow would you like to be able to see a preview of the web page a link will take you to before you click on it?

Or how about being able to quickly preview the images in online photo galleries just by hovering your mouse over the thumbnails?

A wonderful free Google Chrome extension called SwiftPreview will let you perform both of these tricks!

SwiftPreview is extremely simple and easy to use. Simply install the add-on, then whenever you hover your mouse over a link or thumbnail image, a preview image will be displayed on the screen. If you like what you see, simply click the link or photo and it will open in your browser as usual. If you decide the content being linked to doesn’t interest you, simply remove the mouse from the link or thumbnail and the preview goes away.  [Read more…]
