Question from Garry:  Rick, I was a faithful Internet Explorer user for years (I guess you can say I’m a creature of habit) but after switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10 I decided to give Chrome a try.

Now that I’ve tried it for a few weeks, I have to agree with all the good things I’d heard about Chrome because it doesn’t crash all the time, and it seems to really be a lot faster than IE too.

I knew there’d be a learning curve, but it wasn’t all that bad really.

But there’s one thing I just can’t figure out. How the heck do you display a web page’s HTML source code?  [Read more…]

How to disable Google Chrome’s new ‘Reading List’ feature

Posted on March 18, 2021

Do you use Google’s Chrome web browser?

If so, you’ve probably noticed a new “Reading List” link over on the right side of Chrome’s Bookmarks Bar.

If you’re unfamiliar with it, “Reading List” is a place where you can store links to web pages that you want to read at a later date/time.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who like and use this new feature, but I don’t know any of them.

Question from Heather G.:  The Chrome browser on my Windows 10 PC keeps crashing on me.

Sometimes it’ll just freeze and other times the window just blanks out and turns white. It happens every time I load Chrome, but sometimes it’ll take a couple of minutes.

I tried to uninstall Chrome using the “Add or remove program” thingy in Control Panel, but it gives me this error message:

“Please close all Google Chrome windows and try again.”

It does this even though there are no Chrome windows open. Rebooting doesn’t help either. How can I delete Chrome from my computer so I can reinstall it?

Q&A: Why is Chrome using so much of my computer’s RAM?

Posted on September 29, 2020

Question from Keith:  Hi Rick. I’m having a computer problem that I hope you can help me fix.

I have a Dell desktop computer that’s running Windows 10 Home.

This machine has 8GB of RAM which seems like it should be plenty, but I’ve started getting frequent “Low Memory” warnings.

When I open the Task Manager I see that there are over two dozen Chrome processes running, and every one of them is using a big chunk of of RAM.

Even if I only have a couple of Chrome tabs open I still see a bunch of Chrome processes eating up lots of RAM! Is this normal? If not, what can I do to fix it?

Q&A: How can I get Google to stop putting pictures in my search suggestions?

Posted on June 7, 2019

Question from Jeanne:  Hi Rick. I really like your site and all the useful info you provide. I’ve really learned a lot about computers since I started following it.

I have a question that I hope you can answer for me.

When I got to work this morning and started using my computer I noticed that Google is now putting little pictures in the search suggestions when I type something into the address bar.

This isn’t good because I deal with the public and they can see my screen while I’m working. I’d hate for a “bad” picture to pop up while I’m searching for something and have them see it.

Is there any way I can turn that off to keep the pictures from popping up when I search?
