Q&A: How can I get Google to stop putting pictures in my search suggestions?

Posted on June 7, 2019

Question from Jeanne:  Hi Rick. I really like your site and all the useful info you provide. I’ve really learned a lot about computers since I started following it.

I have a question that I hope you can answer for me.

When I got to work this morning and started using my computer I noticed that Google is now putting little pictures in the search suggestions when I type something into the address bar.

This isn’t good because I deal with the public and they can see my screen while I’m working. I’d hate for a “bad” picture to pop up while I’m searching for something and have them see it.

Is there any way I can turn that off to keep the pictures from popping up when I search?

Heads-Up: Google is removing the “Secure” indicator for secure websites from the Chrome browser

Posted on May 21, 2018

If you’re like me you’ve probably grown used to seeing the green “Secure” indicator in the address bar when you visit a secure website with the Chrome web browser.

That simple word “Secure” and green padlock gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling about the websites I visit because I know that any information I might supply to them will be encrypted before it’s transmitted across the Internet to their server.

Well, here’s a little heads-up: Google will soon be eliminating that comforting “Secure” designation from Chrome.  [Read more…]

ATTN Bloggers: You MUST enable SSL Encryption on your blog(s) before July 2018!

Posted on February 12, 2018

I’ve been sounding the alarm about the need for bloggers to enable SSL encryption on their blogs for some time now, and the time window for getting it done is closing fast.

All the major web browsers are now labeling any non-encrypted page with a form on it as insecure, and Google is planning to completely drop the hammer on insecure sites in July.

The folks at Google have just announced in this post on their Chromium blog that they’re planning to release Chrome 68 in July 2018.

That post also states that that new version of Chrome is going to mark every page with a URL that starts with https:// instead of https:// as an insecure (and thus dangerous) page.

That means starting in July your blog’s traffic will likely fall off the edge of a cliff if you haven’t enabled SSL encryption on it by then. Here’s why:  [Read more…]

Google Chrome to start blocking deceptive and irritating ads by default on February 15

Posted on December 26, 2017

Do you hate it when you click what looks like a link to an interesting article only to discover that it’s really just an advertisement?

And how about those ads that prompt you to to click by using a title that ends up having nothing to do with the product or service they’re hawking?

Or maybe video ads that start playing automatically just as soon as you load the page?

And perhaps worst of all are ads that “pop up” or “slide in” over top of the content, usually with the little “X” you click to close the ad located way off in the distance. I hate having to search high and low for a way to close an ad just so I can read the article!

If you despise deceptive and irritating ads like these as much as I do, you’ll finally find some relief come February 15, 2018.  [Read more…]

Make your Chrome browser history easier to read and understand with ‘Better History’

Posted on October 26, 2017

Important update: The browser extension mentioned in this post has been removed from the Chrome web store. It apparently morphed into malware so Google banned it. I have removed the links to it from the original post.

Have you ever tried to find a web page you’ve visited in the past by scanning your browser history? If so, you probably found the experience both difficult and frustrating.

Most browsers display your history items in a boring, confusing list that’s hard to read and even harder to understand, but a fantastic Chrome extension called Better History makes finding the URL you’re looking for a breeze!

Chrome already does a much better job at displaying your browser’s history items than most other browsers, but the Better History extension takes that already enhanced usability to an entirely different level.  [Read more…]
