Q&A: Why did Google remove the word ‘Secure’ from Chrome’s address bar?

Posted on January 13, 2021

Question from Mike:  Chrome used to display the word “Secure” in the address bar to indicate that the webpage you’re viewing is encrypted.

I really liked that because I didn’t have to worry about hackers stealing my info if I typed anything into a form on that page.

A while back I noticed that Google has removed that “Secure” indicator from Chrome’s address bar.

Why on earth did they get rid of it?

Q&A: How can I stop my downloads from filling up my PC’s small SSD?

Posted on December 4, 2020

Question from Micah H:  I read your post about how replacing the hard drive with an SSD will make a computer run a lot faster.

That really sounded good so I installed a Micron 60GB SSD (I got it at a GREAT price!) in my HP desktop PC.

I installed Windows 10 on the SSD and put most of my programs on the hard drive (which I had left in there for extra storage).

The SSD did speed the computer up quite a bit but I’m having a problem with it running out of storage space.

How to install extensions for Microsoft Edge from the Chrome Web Store

Posted on November 28, 2020

As you probably know, Microsoft was never really able to gain any traction with the Edge browser they developed from scratch.

While there were other reasons for Edge’s failure to catch on with the masses, it was primarily due to the extreme lack of browser extensions that were available for it.

Microsoft eventually gave up on their proprietary version of Edge and developed a totally different Edge that is built upon Google’s ultra-popular Chromium browser code.

And guess what? Since Edge is now essentially Chrome at its core, it can now run Chrome extensions!

Q&A: Should I keep using Chrome or switch to the new Microsoft Edge browser?

Posted on June 30, 2020

Question from Judy:  When I purchased my PC with windows 10, it came with Microsoft Edge as the web browser.

I preferred using Google Chrome so I installed it and set it as my default browser.

The other day Windows updated and automatically installed a new version of Microsoft Edge.

Now I’m not sure if I should keep Chrome as my default browser or use Edge. What do you recommend?

Also, should I delete whichever one I decide not to use?

I would appreciate your thoughts on which is the best way to go. Thank you.

ATTN Bloggers: Chrome is now flagging non-https pages as ‘Not Secure’ right in the address bar!

Posted on June 12, 2019

If you’re a blogger and your blog hasn’t yet been secured with SSL/TLS encryption you need to get that done ASAP!

Back in December 2017 I wrote this post warning bloggers about the need to get their blogs encrypted before Google started actively penalizing non-secured sites.

Well, that day has come…

Google recently rolled out an update to their Chrome browser that causes it to now flag unencrypted pages as “Not Secure” right in the address bar!

Up until recently it was widely understood that only sites that collected credit card data or other sensitive visitor information really needed to be encrypted, but Google has changed that by deciding to clearly mark non-encrypted pages as “Not Secure”.

To show you what I’m talking about, I took a partial screenshot of a web page that I knew to be unencrypted at the time I began writing this post (the site has since been encrypted): [Read more…]
