Q&A: Is there a router that can be set up without using a computer?

Posted on November 3, 2016

Wi-Fi Router
(#ad)

Question from Donna R.:  I know this is probably an unusual question Rick, but is there a router that can be set up using just a smart phone?

I remember setting up all the routers I’ve had before by connecting them to a computer. But my family no longer uses computers, only smart phones and a couple of iPads.

If you don’t know of a router that can be set up without a computer I can always borrow my sister’s laptop, but she lives over 2 hours away!

I’ll be grateful for any advice you can give me. Thanks for your help!

Q&A: How can I stop Windows 10 from resetting my default apps?

Posted on November 2, 2016

Windows-10-logoQuestion from Carl:  I’m a photographer and I often edit hundreds of images in a single day. To make thing simple, I have always kept Photoshop set as the default image viewer on my PC.

The problem is, something changed when I upgraded my computer to Windows 10.

Now every time I set Photoshop as the default image viewer, Windows changes it back to the Windows 10 Photo app every time it installs new Windows Updates.

This is very annoying to say the least. How can I stop it from happening?

Posted on November 1, 2016

google-drive-logoIf you use the Google Drive desktop app on a PC running either Windows Vista or Windows XP, I have some important news for you.

Google is planning to stop supporting Google Drive on those older, no longer supported versions of Windows on January 1, 2017.

According to this post on Google’s blog, the app will continue to work after that date, but there will be no further security updates or support available to users who choose to keep using Google Drive on those abandoned Windows versions.  [Read more…]

‘Flash On Call’ alerts you with a bright flash when you receive a voice call

Posted on October 28, 2016

flash-on-callDo you often miss incoming calls because your Android phone is on mute and you don’t realize that someone is trying to call you?

Sure, the screen will come on and let you know there’s a call coming in, but unless you’re relatively close to the phone (and happen to be looking at it), it’s very easy to miss the visual alert – and hence you miss the call.

Well, there’s a simple way to ensure that you never miss the visual alert for another incoming call. All you have to do is install a handy free app called Flash On Call.  [Read more…]

Scam alert: Weebly has been hacked. Change your password ASAP!

Posted on October 26, 2016

scamPopular website creation service Weebly has been hacked, and the hackers were able to steal the usernames, email addresses, passwords and IP addresses belonging to over 43 million customers.

Weebly claims that the stolen passwords were in encrypted form, but if you have an account with them I strongly recommend that you log in to your account and change your password immediately. As they say, “better safe than sorry”.

They also claim that no credit card or bank account information was stolen, but I recommend that you monitor any accounts that are connected with your Weebly account for unusual activity anyway. Again, “better safe than sorry”.

Unfortunately, this Weebly breach is just the latest in a long string of successful hacking attacks, and I don’t see that string coming to an end any time soon. Therefore, I have a few suggestions for protecting all of your online accounts:
