Posted on November 28, 2016

project-mercury-logoDoes your computer slow to a crawl when you’re running multiple programs or have several browser tabs open?

If so, I’ve been testing a nifty free download called Project Mercury that could help speed things up for you.

Project Mercury is a small, lightweight utility that automatically optimizes the way your computer’s CPU assigns the priority it gives to your PC’s open windows and browser tabs.  [Read more…]

RicksDailyTips Newsletter for Nov. 24, 2016 – Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted on November 24, 2016

Hello my friend. I hope you had a great week!

I am very thankful for the many wonderful things that I have been blessed with in my life, and my wonderful friends are right at the top of that list. And I truly consider you, my faithful reader and subscriber, to be my friend.

On this very special day I want each and every one of you to know how thankful I am that you read my RicksDailyTips Tech Blog and subscribe to my newsletter.

I strive daily to give you information that’s actually informative and useful. I know from your feedback that I often achieve that goal. I also know that I miss the mark on occasion.

Without your patronage and friendship I wouldn’t be able to continue sharing the things I’ve learned from my years in the tech business via this blog and newsletter. And I love doing that because I love helping people when I can, even if it’s just by a tiny bit.

In summary, you are not just another email address in a database or just another “hit” on my blog. To me, you are a friend. I appreciate you and your friendship more than you can know.

Special note: I won’t be sending out a newsletter on Saturday as usual. I’ll be spending the weekend with family and friends, and I hope you’ll be able to do the same.

Thanks again, and Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

newsletterHello again everyone. I hope you all had a great week!

With Thanksgiving now less than a week away, many folks are getting ready to turn their attention to Christmas.

As always, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the weekend in between will be huge shopping days.

The weekend after Thanksgiving always means monster crowds at virtually every brick-and-mortar retail store.

Even worse, there are almost always reports of people getting trampled and fights breaking out. And that’s after having to drive around for an hour looking for a parking spot!

Luckily, there’s an easy way to avoid the Black Friday crowds and the aggravation that goes along with them. Simply do the bulk of your Christmas shopping online instead!  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is the Windows 10 on my PC a retail version or OEM?

Posted on November 18, 2016

Windows-10-logoQuestion from John G.:  I’ve been reading your blog posts for a long time Rick, and several of them discuss the difference between retail versions of Windows and OEM versions.

Thanks to you, I now know the difference between the two. What I’m not sure about is whether the Windows 10 on my own computer is retail or OEM.

I know it used to be OEM because Windows 8 came pre-installed when I bought the computer. But I recently installed the free Windows 10 update and I was told that updating to Windows 10 automatically converts your Windows installation to a retail version. Is that correct?  [Read more…]
