Question from Shelley:  Hi, Rick. My computer is an older Mac Pro MC560LL/A and it only has USB 2.0 ports. I’d really like to be able to use a USB 3.0 hard drive with this computer.

My question is can I add some USB 3.0 ports to my Mac Pro?  [Read more…]

Question from Oliver:  I just replaced my old desktop computer with a brand new Dell laptop with Windows 11.

I like the new computer ok, but I’m having one problem that I hope you can help me solve.

Whenever I’m typing something on my computer I have a hard time seeing the text cursor. Even worse, I also have trouble seeing the mouse pointer.

Sadly, my eyes just aren’t what they used to be. I guess that just goes with the territory when you’re in your 70’s.  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I completely remove Norton antivirus from my PC?

Posted on April 9, 2023

Question from Dagan:  I’ve been using Norton 360 for years, but it recently let a bunch of viruses slip through and get installed on my computer.

Norton removes a bunch of viruses every time I run it but they just keep coming right back.

I want to ditch Norton and install a different antivirus app but I know you’re only supposed to run one antivirus app at a time.

The problem I’m having is I can’t seem to get all the Norton 360 files uninstalled so that I can install Malwarebytes. The Windows thingy that uninstalls programs gets rid of some of the Norton files but some of them come right back when I reboot the computer.

How can I completely uninstall ALL the Norton files from my hard drive?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Why does Facebook make you enter your birthdate if you can just hide it?

Posted on April 6, 2023

Question from Sheryl:  I just finished helping my sister set up a Facebook account and something about the setup process puzzled me.

One of the things they asked for was her birthdate. She didn’t want to enter it but there was no way to skip it.

Since she couldn’t avoid entering a birthdate we simply made one up.

Facebook lets you hide your birthdate from everyone but yourself so what’s the purpose for them demanding that you enter it in the first place? [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I transfer videos from VHS tapes to DVDs?

Posted on April 5, 2023

Question from Evelyn:  First off, I really appreciate the service you provide answering people’s tech questions, Rick.

I’s so kind of you to do that. I hope you’ll indulge me with a question of my own.

Sadly, my father passed away a while back, but before he passed he said he wanted me to have two large boxes of VHS tapes containing home videos and family recordings that he had made over the years.

I would really love to transfer the contents of those old VHS tapes to DVDs.

Can you tell me the best way to do that without spending a ton of money? [Read more…]
