Q&A: How can I display Google Adsense ads only on individual posts using Genesis Simple Hooks?

Posted on February 24, 2014

adsense-logoQuestion from Harlan F.:  I have a problem Rick, and I’m really hoping you can help me solve it.

I have a WordPress blog that uses the Genesis Framework and the Genesis Simple Hooks plugin to display ads on my blog. I pasted my Adsense code into the genesis_after_content hook in order to have an ad displayed at the end of every post (and page).

It works great, but the problem is it also displays an ad after every post snippet on the home page. As you probably know, this is a big no-no since Google limits us to three Adsense ads per page.

My question is how can I get Simple Hooks to display an Adsense ad at the end of each post without also displaying them on the home page?

Q&A: How do I capture a screenshot on my Nook HD and email it to a friend?

Posted on February 21, 2014

nook-hdQuestion from Cassie:  Hello Rick. I have a Nook HD and I like it pretty well. I’d really like to buy a Kindle Fire HD but it’ll be a while before I can afford one.

In the meantime I really need to be able to take screenshots on my Nook HD every once in a while and email them to my friends. I’m pretty sure this can be done but I can’t figure out how to do it. Can you tell me?

Rick’s answer:  The Kindle Fire HD is a fantastic tablet Cassie, but the Nook HD is a good one as well. I hope yours continues serving you well until you’re ready to buy your Kindle. When that time comes, you might want to check out the Kindle Fire HDX as well as the regular HD model.

To answer to your question, it’s actually pretty easy to capture a screenshot on your Nook HD. Here’s how to do it:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I stop all auto-updates in Windows 8.1?

Posted on February 13, 2014

windows-8-1Question from Alan J.:  Rick, I travel frequently and I use my mobile phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot via “tethering” for my laptop. The problem is I’m only allotted 2 GB of data transfer per month.

2GB would be enough but something on my laptop is constantly checking for updates and downloading them. I need to put a stop to the auto-updates because they’re using up my paltry supply of monthly data.

I’ve already turned off automatic Windows Updates. How can I prevent ALL auto-updates from my laptop with Windows 8.1?

Q&A: What’s a good, but cheap motherboard for an Intel Core i7 CPU?

Posted on February 11, 2014

gigabyte-lga-1150-motherboardQuestion from Max R.:  I’m planning to build my first home-built computer using an Intel Core i7 CPU and two Corsair 8GB DDR3 RAM sticks (all gifts from my uncle).

I don’t have a lot of money to spend so I need a recommendation for a good, but cheap motherboard that will work with that CPU and RAM. What do you suggest?

Q&A: Why can’t I log in to Google Play after enabling Two Factor Authentication?

Posted on February 9, 2014

google-logoQuestion from Angelia C.:  Hi Rick! Thanks so much for your tips, but I’m having a problem with one of them. I took your advice about enabling two factor authentication on my Google account but now I can’t log into Google Play on my Samsung phone.

It keeps telling me my password isn’t right even though I know it is. Can you tell me how to fix this? I really need to get into Google Play to update my apps! Thanks!!!

Rick’s answer:  Hi Angelia. The problem you’re having is happening to lots of folks. I even ran into it myself after enabling two factor authentication on my own account.

It seems that some Android devices aren’t capable of dealing effectively with two factor authentication. But luckily, there’s an easy fix. All you have to do is create an Application Specific Password. Here’s how:  [Read more…]
