Q&A: What’s the best way to run Linux without installing it on my hard drive?

Posted on February 24, 2015

Question from Evan L.:  Hi Rick. First of all, I love your site and all the great info you post here. Thanks so much!

And now on to my question. I just finished reading your post about replacing Windows with Linux to speed up an older computer, and I’d love to give Ubuntu a whirl on my Acer S3-391-6046 Ultrabook.

I don’t want to install Ubuntu on my hard drive because the drive is so small (and full) that I’d have to wipe out Windows 8.1 to make room for it, and I don’t even know if I’ll like using Linux or not.

I know that you can run Ubuntu from either a CD or a USB Flash Drive, but I have no idea which way to go on that. What do you recommend?

Posted on February 23, 2015

youtube-logoQuestion from Jimmy A.:  I was looking at the list of installed apps on my Droid and I saw that there’s a YouTube app on there. I never installed it, and I don’t want it, but I can’t figure out how to remove it.

Can you tell me what I need to do to uninstall this stubborn app from my Droid? Thanks in advance for your help.

Q&A: How do I get my PC to boot up after Windows Update failed?

Posted on February 17, 2015

windows-7Question from Sierra F.:  Rick, I’m in trouble and I need your help!

My computer was installing Windows Updates when the power flickered off and back on. It happened so quickly that the computer didn’t even shut down, but it somehow aborted the update process and an error on the screen said the update wasn’t successful.

I tried to install the updates again, but it said no updates were available. I then tried to restart the PC, but it hangs up about half way through the boot process. Please, please, please tell me how to fix this without reinstalling Windows 7? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Q&A: Will I need to reinstall Windows if I upgrade my PC’s motherboard and CPU?

Posted on February 14, 2015

windows-7Question from Andy T.:  A few years ago one of my co-workers helped me build a computer from scratch and we installed a full retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on it. I recently tried to upgrade the memory but found out that I have already maxed out the RAM for this motherboard & CPU combo.

Since I really want to add an additional 8GB of RAM and run USB 3.0 natively, I’m planning to upgrade the motherboard and CPU. I’m just wondering if I’ll need to reinstall Windows.

Will I? Or should I, even if I don’t have to?

Q&A: How can I get rid of the ‘SecureBoot isn’t Configured Correctly’ message?

Posted on February 12, 2015

windows-8-1Question from Stephen Y.:  I recently upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and I keep getting this message whenever I’m on the Desktop:

SecureBoot isn’t Configured Correctly

I’ve tried everything I can think of and I can’t find a way to fix this. Can you tell me what I need to do to get rid of this annoying message?
