Google takes aim at Windows by adding more offline capabilities to Chrome OS

Posted on May 8, 2014

chrome-os-logoGoogle’s Chrome Operating System is a huge hit among users who simply want to use their computers to access the Internet and Internet-based services. In fact, the number one selling laptop on Amazon right now is a Chromebook.

But as popular as Chromebooks already are, Google plans to widen their appeal even more by adding features that will allow them to do many of the things that Windows machines can do when they are offline. For example, the latest version of Chrome OS allows you to watch entire movies offline. And by the way, you can even edit video on a Chromebook now.  [Read more…]

7 tips for keeping Windows XP secure without Microsoft’s support

Posted on May 7, 2014

windows-xp-logoMicrosoft’s abandonment of Windows XP means you’re now on your own when it comes to protecting your XP-based machines against security threats.

Although they have already broken their promise not to release any more security updates for Windows XP, Microsoft likely won’t release more of them unless they feel pressured to do so.

That being said, many people still visit websites that require Java in order to work correctly, and for those folks removing it from their systems just isn’t practical. That’s why I decided to write this short tutorial explaining how to install or update Java without installing the Ask Toolbar along with it.  [Read more…]

Posted on May 3, 2014

firefox-logoMozilla Firefox is one of the best web browsers out there, but the typical Firefox installation isn’t quite as speedy as it could be these days.

To help speed things up a bit, the developers at Mozilla have added a new tweak that can help prevent Firefox from freezing up at times. It’s a nifty HTTP cache, and here’s how you can enable it:  [Read more…]

Posted on April 28, 2014

netflix-logoIf you’re a Netflix subscriber, you might have noticed that when you reach the end of an episode of a television show the next episode in the series begins playing automatically. Whether or not this happens for you will depend on your Netflix settings.

Some people love this “Post-Play” feature, but others hate it. If you fall into the latter camp, it’s easy to disable Post-Play to prevent the next episode in a series from playing until you want it to. Here’s how:  [Read more…]
