WordPress: The WP-Slimstat plugin has over a million blogs at risk of being hacked

Posted on February 26, 2015

wordpress-logoDo you run a WordPress blog that uses the very popular WP-Slimstat plugin?

If so, a newly discovered security hole in certain versions of the plugin could have your blog at risk for data theft and other serious security breaches. In fact, hackers could possibly even exploit the flaw and take control of your entire blog.

If your blog uses this plugin, I recommend that you log into your WordPress Dashboard immediately and check to see which version of WP-Slimstat is currently installed. If it’s 3.9.5 or lower (or if WordPress says there’s an update available), you need to update WP-Slimstat to the latest version NOW.  [Read more…]

Bloggers beware: The MailPoet plugin is letting hackers take over thousands of WordPress sites

Posted on July 25, 2014

wordpress-logoIf you’re a blogger and you use the popular MailPoet plugin on your WordPress blog, you need to update it to the latest version immediately.

MailPoet adds several useful features and capabilities to a blog, but an extremely serious issue has arisen for its users.

A previously unknown vulnerability in the plugin allows hackers to access full control over your WordPress installation, including the ability to add malicious code to your WordPress core files, theme files and plugins. They can also alter your posts and pages.  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I display Google Adsense ads only on individual posts using Genesis Simple Hooks?

Posted on February 24, 2014

adsense-logoQuestion from Harlan F.:  I have a problem Rick, and I’m really hoping you can help me solve it.

I have a WordPress blog that uses the Genesis Framework and the Genesis Simple Hooks plugin to display ads on my blog. I pasted my Adsense code into the genesis_after_content hook in order to have an ad displayed at the end of every post (and page).

It works great, but the problem is it also displays an ad after every post snippet on the home page. As you probably know, this is a big no-no since Google limits us to three Adsense ads per page.

My question is how can I get Simple Hooks to display an Adsense ad at the end of each post without also displaying them on the home page?

If you ever find yourself needing to move your WordPress blog to a new server, the process can be completed in minutes if both the old server and the new one are running the excellent WHM Control Panel software. Here’s how:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I add a Facebook ‘Like Box’ to my WordPress blog?

Posted on June 12, 2013

facebook-logoQuestion from Brenda K.:  Hi Rick. I have created a Facebook page for my WordPress blog where I post about ladies fashions. I’d like to add a Facebook “Like Box” similar to the one you have on this site to the blog. I’ve searched Facebook from top to bottom and I can’t find and instructions for adding one. Can you tell me how to do it?

Rick‘s answer:  Brenda, when I decided to add a ‘Like Box’ to RicksDailyTips.com I had to search high and low for the instructions as well. Find them I did however, and basically all you have to do is fill out a short form and then copy and paste the code provided into the theme of your WordPress blog wherever you want the ‘Like Box’ to appear (usually in the sidebar).

Here’s how to add a Facebook ‘Like Box’ to your WordPress blog:  [Read more…]
