Review: Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual

Posted on April 7, 2015

windows-8-1-the-missing-manual-coverMost everyone knows that the Internet is an awesome resource that’s filled with information on virtually every topic known to man, but sometimes there’s just no substitute for a good old-fashioned printed book.

Although most of my research is done online nowadays, I still keep a small library of physical books on hand. And one book that has been a great help to me is Windows 8.1: The Missing Manual.

There was a time when every software program you purchased came with a printed manual, and that included MS-DOS and Windows. You not only got a disk, but a book explaining how to use the software as well.  [Read more…]

How to make Windows 8.1 boot directly to the Desktop

Posted on March 19, 2015

windows-8-1Windows 8.1 is a huge improvement over Windows 8 because it fixes a number of the most despised “changes” that Microsoft made to the newly-designed Windows interface.

How to force Windows 8.1 to show all file extensions

Posted on February 20, 2015

windows-8-1As they have with previous versions of Windows, Microsoft decided to hide “known” file extensions by default in Windows 8.1.

Why they would ever think it’s a good idea to hide them is beyond me, but of course the guys and gals in Redmond have had me scratching my head in wonder for years.

In addition to making it difficult to determine a file’s “type” while viewing it in a list, hiding file extensions also makes it easier for hackers to trick us into opening malicious files. Not a good thing!

As luck would have it, it’s very easy to prevent Windows 8.1 from hiding file extensions. Just follow these steps:  [Read more…]

Posted on February 12, 2015

windows-8-1Question from Stephen Y.:  I recently upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and I keep getting this message whenever I’m on the Desktop:

I’ve tried everything I can think of and I can’t find a way to fix this. Can you tell me what I need to do to get rid of this annoying message?
