Q&A: How do I disable User Account Control in Windows?

Posted on January 29, 2022

Question from Danny:  I recently bought a Dell desktop computer and it’s driving me crazy.

Every time I try to install a new program a stupid “User Account Control” box pops up asking for permission to make changes to the system. I find this extremely annoying.

My question is how do I disable those annoying User Account Control pop-ups?

Q&A: How much RAM can I install in my computer?

Note: The links in this post are affiliate links.

Question from Adrien:  I have a three year old custom-built desktop computer that’s in need of some upgrades.

I plan to replace the motherboard in a year or so but right now I can only afford to add an SSD and (hopefully) max out the RAM.

I know which SSD I need to buy but I’m not sure how much RAM I can add.

Can you tell me how much RAM can be installed on a 3 year old Gigabyte motherboard?  [Read more…]

Make your laptop’s touchpad easier to use by turning on ‘ClickLock’

Posted on February 28, 2021

Do you use a laptop?

If so, you probably know how difficult it can be using the touchpad to scroll through web pages or to drag and drop items.

Yep, it’s a two-handed process for the less dexterous among us (which definitely includes yours truly).

You basically have to use a finger on one hand to hold the left touchpad button while using the other hand to move the object in question around on the screen.

What you might not know however is that a simple settings change can make your touchpad a lot easier to use…

Q&A: Can I reset a laptop if I don’t know all the passwords?

Posted on February 28, 2021

Question from Barry V.:  I bought an Acer Aspire S7-391 laptop with Windows 8 at an estate auction.

I took a chance on it because it looks brand new and I was able to buy it for only $20. I’m hoping that’s a good deal (LOL).

Once I got the laptop home and booted it up I found out that it has 3 user accounts on it.

One account is an administrator account without a password on it. The other two accounts are standard accounts that I can’t get into because they do have passwords (and I don’t know them).

I’d like to reset this machine back to the factory default settings. If I boot into the administrator account and do the reset will it wipe out the other two accounts even though I don’t have the passwords to them?

Q&A: Does a System Image Backup save everything on the hard drive?

Posted on December 7, 2020

Question from Olivene:  Rick, I spent a few minutes reading your post that explains how to create a System Image Backup in Windows 10, but I’m a little confused.

I had Carbonite backing up my files for a couple of years and they didn’t back up any of my Windows files.

I learned that the hard way after my hard drive crashed on me.

What exactly is backed up when you create a System Image Backup?

Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me. I love your blog and I always learn something useful every time come here!
