Is Microsoft’s latest “Get Windows 10” app actually malware?

Posted on June 9, 2016

microsoft-windowsOur friend Nick Heath over at TechRepublic recently pointed out that Microsoft is breaking one of their own developer guidelines with their latest “Get Windows 10” app.

And in my opinion, it’s quite clear that he is correct.

The specific guideline they are breaking is located about one quarter of the way down the page, and it reads like this:  [Read more…]

Warning: Pay attention to this Windows 10 upgrade notice if you don’t want Windows 10!

Posted on May 17, 2016

Windows-10-logoAs you probably know, Microsoft has been very aggressive of late with their attempts to get you to install the free Windows 10 update.

Well, it appears that they have decided to try toning it down just a bit with their latest update notice, but that “toning down” can be a bit misleading.

In order to understand why it’s misleading, it’s important to carefully consider the way the Windows 10 update notice is constructed.

With that in mind, lets take a look at the notice:  [Read more…]

Lock down your PC with these essential Windows 10 privacy settings

Posted on May 13, 2016

Windows-10-logoIf you’ve been running Windows 10 for a while you have probably already decided whether you like it or not.

I started using the “Technical Preview” version several months ago, and now that I’ve had a chance to use the final release version for a while I can tell you that I really like Windows 10.

But as much as I like it, there are some things about Windows 10 that I’m not all that crazy about. One of the things that irritates me the most is how Microsoft has configured many of Windows 10’s default Privacy Settings to gather as much info about your Windows and Internet usage as possible.  [Read more…]

Updates to Windows 10 on older PCs have slowed to a trickle

Posted on May 4, 2016

Windows-10-logoAs you probably know, Microsoft has become extremely aggressive with their attempts to push the free Windows 10 upgrade onto reluctant Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users.

Since its official release in July 2015, Windows 10 has gained market share at a healthy clip each and every month as users decided to take advantage of the free upgrade deal while it was still available.

But apparently users weren’t upgrading fast enough to meet Microsoft’s long-term goals, so they decided to change the Windows Update procedure to make the update to Windows 10 virtually automatic.  [Read more…]

How to “roll back” your Windows 10 installation to Windows 7 after 30 days

Did you update your PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10 only to decide later that you’d like to go back to Window 7?

As you probably know, you can easily roll your Windows 10 installation back to Windows 7 if you want to, but there’s a catch…

You’ll only have 30 days to roll your system back to Windows 7 if you decide that you don’t want Windows 10.

If you wait longer than a month your computer’s original Windows 7 license will be permanently assigned to your new Windows 10 installation.

That being said, if you have already missed the 30 day roll-back window you can still install Windows 7 onto your machine, but it’ll cost you a few bucks.  [Read more…]
