Q&A: Can you ‘Undo’ a System Restore on a Windows PC?

Posted on June 6, 2023

Question from Edward:  Hello, Rick. Love your site! I hope you can answer a question for me.

I downloaded a game onto my Dell laptop a few days ago and I immediately started getting lots of pop-up ads on my screen.

I uninstalled the game but I’m still getting the pop-ups. I read in a Windows forum that a System Restore should fix the problem but that there are no guarantees.

My question is can a System Restore be reversed if it doesn’t fix the problem?

Warning: More Macs are now getting infected with malware

Posted on May 23, 2023

For years, Mac owners were led to believe that their computers were immune from malware infections.

In fact, if you asked them for an opinion on the best antivirus protection, chances are the response would be “Buy a Mac”.

But truth be told, Macs were never “immune” from catching malware at all.  [Read more…]

Scam alert: Fake ‘Update Chrome’ notices are spreading malware

Posted on April 13, 2023

Our friends over at Bleeping Computer have alerted their readers to a very dangerous Chrome Update related scam that’s making the rounds right now.

I won’t go into the details here because Bleeping Computer explains how the scam works much better than I ever could.

I recommend that you click over there and read it if you’re interested in the details.

If not, just remember this: Never attempt to update Chrome or any other browser via a third-party website. Always install any pending browser updates manually using the update tool that’s actually built into the browser.  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I completely remove Norton antivirus from my PC?

Posted on April 9, 2023

Question from Dagan:  I’ve been using Norton 360 for years, but it recently let a bunch of viruses slip through and get installed on my computer.

Norton removes a bunch of viruses every time I run it but they just keep coming right back.

I want to ditch Norton and install a different antivirus app but I know you’re only supposed to run one antivirus app at a time.

The problem I’m having is I can’t seem to get all the Norton 360 files uninstalled so that I can install Malwarebytes. The Windows thingy that uninstalls programs gets rid of some of the Norton files but some of them come right back when I reboot the computer.

How can I completely uninstall ALL the Norton files from my hard drive?  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I find out how much data each app on my PC is using?

Posted on February 9, 2023

Question from Gary:  My ISP has notified me that I have exceeded the monthly data allotment for my Internet plan and that I might have to pay extra this month.

I don’t understand this because I only use the Internet for about 1 to 2 hours per day and I don’t do much streaming at all other than watching an occasional YouTube video.

I only have one computer using my WiFi connection. No phones or tablets use WiFi, just this one computer. There is nothing connected via a wired connection either.

I’m hoping you can help me find out what’s using all that data?  [Read more…]
