Scam Alert: Beware the insidious fake AdwCleaner look-alike that’s going around (it’s actually malware)

scam A few months ago I wrote about an awesome anti-malware program called AdwCleaner.

This free utility will quickly scan for and remove virtually every type of unwanted toolbar, adware and browser hijacker that’s out there from your computer.

As I explained in the post, AdwCleaner works great, and since it’s free I highly recommend that everyone download it and run it on occasion.

Well, now the scammers have turned the tables on AdwCleaner by creating a fake look-alike program that claims to be the real AdwCleaner, but is actually malware.

Scam Alert: If you visit Forbes.com, your PC might have been exposed to malware.

scam If you visited the popular financial news website Forbes.com between November 28 and December 1, 2014, your PC might possibly be infected with a virus.

First the good news: If you are diligent about keeping Internet Explorer up to date by installing all available updates as soon as they become available, you should be in the clear.

And still better news: If you use Firefox, Chrome, or any other non-IE browser you were definitely safe from this particular attack. [Read more…]

Scam Alert: Beware the “Update Flash Player” virus scam on Facebook

Well, there’s yet another extremely dangerous scam making the rounds on Facebook, and it’s an easy one to fall for. It goes something like this…

You’re scrolling through your Facebook news feed when an interesting video catches your attention. You click on it to watch it, but instead of the video you’re presented with a warning that your computer’s Flash Player is out of date and needs to be updated. Well, it doesn’t. [Read more…]
