How to run Windows on your Mac (without ditching macOS)

Posted on September 21, 2022

Is there a Windows program (or two, or ten) that you’d really love to run but you just don’t want to ditch your Mac and buy a PC?

Well guess what? You can easily run Windows programs and apps right on your Mac while still using macOS as the machine’s primary operating system.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can I reset a laptop if I don’t know all the passwords?

Posted on September 14, 2022

Question from Barry:  I bought an Acer Aspire S7-391 laptop with Windows 8 at an estate auction.

I took a chance on it because it looks brand new and I was able to buy it for only $20. I’m hoping that’s a good deal (LOL).

Once I got the laptop home and booted it up I found out that it has 3 user accounts on it.

The machine boots up fine into an administrator account that doesn’t have a password on it. The other two accounts I can’t get into because they do have passwords (and I don’t know them).

I’d like to reset this machine back to the factory default setting so I can I install Linux on it. Can you tell me how to do the reset?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can you use Zoom on a Linux PC?

Posted on July 9, 2022

Question from Emmett: I have a question about Zoom and I’m hoping you can answer it for me.

My laptop has been giving me problems and I’m thinking of replacing Windows with Linux Mint like you mentioned in this blog post.

The only thing holding me back is I’ve heard that Zoom won’t work on a Linux computer, and I really need to use Zoom. If it won’t work with Linux that’ll be a deal-breaker for me.

My question is will Zoom work with Linux or not?  [Read more…]

Give an older PC new life by replacing Windows with Linux

In this post I’m going to explain what Linux is, and more importantly, what it can do for you as the owner of an older PC that’s running a version of Windows that has been abandoned by Microsoft.

As you probably know by now, Microsoft is no longer releasing security updates for many versions of Windows, which means computers that are still running them are wide open to hackers and malware.

But an awesome free operating system called Linux can make using that unsafe computer safe again.

Q&A: Does Linux need a bigger hard drive than Windows?

Note: The links in this post are affiliate links.

Question from Marla:  I have an older HP laptop with Windows 7 that’s got really slow over the years.

I read your post about replacing Windows with Linux and since Windows 7 is no longer safe to use I’d really like to do that.

I don’t use this laptop for anything but Facebook so I believe it’ll work out just fine.

The thing is this laptop only has a 320GB hard drive in it. Is that enough space to hold Linux or will I need to replace the hard drive with a bigger one?  [Read more…]
