Q&A: How can I make Firefox open email links in Gmail?

Posted on June 5, 2024

Question from Raymond:  I hope you can help me solve a problem I’m having with email links, Rick. It’s absolutely driving me up the wall.

Whenever I click an email link on a web page in Firefox it automatically loads Outlook from my hard drive, and I don’t want it to.

I switched my email from Outlook to Gmail several months ago but I can’t figure out how to make email links open automatically in Gmail without having to copy the link and paste it into a new blank email.

Can you tell me what I need to do to fix that?  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I remove the previews from my Gmail inbox?

Posted on May 28, 2024

Question from Paul:  I recently switched my email from another service to Gmail and I have a question that I hope you can answer.

My Gmail inbox shows short previews of the email text beside each email’s subject line.

I’ve found that the previews make the screen look crowded and they are distracting to me.

Can you please tell me how to disable the previews so I’ll see nothing but the subject lines?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can I delete Gmail without deleting my entire Google account?

Posted on February 16, 2024

Question from Jennifer:  I read somewhere (I think it might have been on your blog) that it’s best to close unused email accounts to prevent hackers from taking them over and using them to spread spam.

I have a Gmail email address that I rarely use and I’d like to delete it. The thing is I do use a couple of other Googly things so I need to keep my Google account open.

Is it possible to close just the Gmail and keep the Google account open?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is Google now fining people for spamming with Gmail?

Posted on January 31, 2024

Question from Beverly:  Google sent me an email saying my Gmail account was caught sending spam.

They said I have to pay a $250 fine within 48 hours or my Gmail address will be permanently shut down.

This seems like a scam to me, but the email looks real and I can’t afford to take a chance on losing my Gmail address. Everything I do online is linked to that address.

My question: Is this email legit? [Read more…]

Scam alert: Beware fake Gmail ‘account closure’ emails

Posted on January 24, 2024

There’s a very dangerous email scam making the rounds again, and as before it’s catching a lot of Gmail users off-guard.

As usual, the text of the email varies a bit, but the message conveyed is always the same.

The email claims to be from Google in response to a request to close your Gmail account.  [Read more…]
