Microsoft Office 365 subscribers to get unlimited OneDrive storage

Posted on November 11, 2014

Microsoft Office 365Microsoft has announced that all Office 365 subscribers will soon have unlimited OneDrive storage. The removal of the current 1TB cap is currently being rolled out to existing customers, and all users should have unlimited OneDrive storage by early 2015.

This move is in keeping with Microsoft’s stated goal of transitioning from being primarily a software vendor to a major player in the “online services” industry.

OneDrive storage is now tightly integrated into virtually all of Microsoft’s products, and the company is betting that unlimited cloud storage will make those products even more competitive with those of the competition.

If you are a current subscriber to Office 365, you’ll be receiving your free OneDrive upgrade within the next few months. If not, you can get a great deal on an Office 365 subscription at Amazon.

Review: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III SSD

Posted on November 10, 2014

samsung-840-evo-1tb-ssdI’ve written several posts in the past explaining how replacing your PC’s hard drive with a solid state drive (SSD) is the best upgrade you can make for the money, and that’s still the case today.

The only real drawback to upgrading to an SSD has always been the real possibility of sacrificing valuable storage space in exchange for an SSD’s blazing speed.

The good news however is the capacities of solid state drives are steadily increasing even as their prices continue to drop.

Nowadays you can buy a super-fast SSD with plenty of storage without having to pay a small fortune. A great example is the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III SSD.  [Read more…]

How to resolve a missing laptop wireless driver issue in the Windows 10 Preview

Posted on November 10, 2014

windows-10-previewA few weeks ago I wrote a post about Microsoft’s release of the Windows 10 Technical Preview, and many of you decided to download and install it.

I have received several reports of folks having issues with Windows 10 not detecting the wireless LAN adapter in their laptops.

This isn’t really a new issue that just popped up in Windows 10. Every new version of Windows has difficulty detecting and installing the correct drivers for various legacy hardware components, and wireless adapters seem to be affected the most often.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can you help me find a Windows 8 wireless driver for my dad’s laptop?

Posted on November 7, 2014

toshiba-satellite-m505-s4940-laptopQuestion from Christine M.: Hi Rick. I love your tips!! You have helped me out so much over the last 2 months!

Now I need help with my dad’s laptop. It’s a Toshiba Satellite M505-s4940. He just upgraded it to Windows 8 (big mistake IMO) and now his wireless adapter isn’t working.

When he installed Windows 8 it said it couldn’t find a driver for the wireless adapter and it has a yellow exclamation point over it in Device Manager. I downloaded several drivers from the Toshiba website and none of the worked. Can you possibly help me track down a working driver? Dad and I would be eternally grateful! Thanks in advance!

Q&A: Why won’t my external USB hard drive work in a front USB connector?

Posted on November 6, 2014

usb-3-hard-driveQuestion from Dreama L.:  I have a Lenovo desktop computer with Windows 7. I bought an external USB hard drive to make backups with, and it works great when plugged into one of the USB connectors on the back of the PC. It won’t work at all when it’s plugged into the front connectors though.

I’d really like to be able to plug the drive into the front of the computer, make the backup, then unplug it and set it on a shelf until I need to use it again. Can you tell me how to get the drive to work with a front mounted USB connector?
