Q&A: Can you recommend a good ‘Screen Recorder’ app for Linux that’s easy to use?

Posted on October 3, 2020

Question from Earnie:  I’ve been following you on Facebook for a long time Rick, and I’ve learned a lot from the great info you post.

One post that really helped was the one where you basically said we need to ditch Windows 7 because it’s no longer being supported. I had no idea!

After reading that post and pondering my options for several days I finally took your advice and replaced the Windows 7 on my laptop with Linux Mint, and I believe it was a good move.

I checked your list of Linux replacements for Windows programs (very helpful, thanks!) for a screen recorder app but I didn’t see one listed.

I searched Google for Linux screen recorder apps and found several but all the ones I tried are too complicated for what I need.

All I need is a very simple app that can record everything that happens inside the active window.

Is there one that you can recommend?

Why I now recommend Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu Linux

Posted on February 11, 2020

Some time ago I wrote a post explaining how replacing Windows with Linux can breathe new life into and older computer.

Since that post was written I’ve had a lot of people ask me which Linux distro I recommend they install, and I’ve usually responded with Ubuntu, for two reasons:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I change the DNS server settings to use ‘Open DNS’ in Linux Mint?

Posted on May 28, 2019

Question from Brad:  I recently replaced Windows Vista on my old Dell desktop computer with Linux Mint based on your recommendation in this post.

I’m happy with the upgrade (and it really is an upgrade), but I need your help with something.

On my Windows systems I have the DNS server settings all pointing to Open DNS because it seems to work so much better.

I’d like to change the DNS settings on this machine too but I’m afraid I might mess something up if I just go in there changing things without knowing what I’m doing.

Can you give me step-by-step instructions for changing the DNS server to Open DNS in Linux Mint?

Thanks in advance for your help. PS. Love your blog!!!

Q&A: How can I make Chrome stop asking for a password on my Linux laptop?

Posted on July 18, 2017

Question from Oliver:  After reading your post about replacing Windows with Linux I decided to give to try it on an old Windows Vista laptop that I haven’t used in a while.

I took your advice from that post and installed Ubuntu. The installation went fine, and just as you predicted that old laptop now runs a LOT faster than it did with Windows!

Since I’m the only person that will use this machine I removed the password in the user settings and set it to boot into Ubuntu without having to enter a password.

Now the laptop boots up without asking for a password to log in, but every time I load Google Chrome I get a message telling me to enter the password, and I can’t do anything with Chrome until I enter the old password that I deleted from my user account. This is the message I get:

“Enter password to unlock your login keyring“

How can I stop Chrome from asking for a password?

Bloggers take note: Hackers are attacking Linux-based web servers with ransomeware

Posted on November 9, 2015

scamSecurity firm Dr. Web has discovered a new strain of ransomeware that’s attacking Linux-based web servers, encrypting their contents and demanding a ransome from the site owners in exchange for the decryption keys.

That means your website/blog could be at serious risk if your web hosting company isn’t very diligent about protecting their servers from the latest security threats.  [Read more…]
