Scam alert: Beware the ‘You’ll get a second one free scam’

Posted on March 3, 2023

I’m sure you’ve seen those commercials on TV where an overly excited pitchman extols the virtues of a great new widget.

You know, the one that’s guaranteed to make your life better “or we’ll give you your money back!“?

Whether it’s the awesome “liquid rubber in a can”, the amazing “twist-o-matic kitchen utensil” or some other “this widget will so change your life” thingy, the pitches are usually pretty much the same:  [Read more…]

How (and why) to hide your Facebook ‘Friends List’ from the public

Posted on March 3, 2023

Facebook is all about interacting with your friends, but there are times when it’s best to keep your list of Facebook friends hidden from public view.

If you don’t have a need to share files and printers directly over a network, it’s best to turn “File and printer sharing” off because it can leave your files and personal information vulnerable to hackers over the Internet.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is it safe to keep using an antivirus that has expired?

Posted on March 1, 2023

Question from Jimmy:  A few months ago I bought a new laptop that came with McAfee Antivirus pre-installed on it.

I thought it was the real McAfee program but apparently it was just a trial version because this morning I got a notice saying the trial subscription had expired.

I tried to uninstall it so I could install Avira but I can’t get it to uninstall. It gives me an error every time I try to remove it.

My question is would it be safe for me to keep using the McAfee program that’s installed on my laptop even though it’s expired? [Read more…]
