Today’s quick tech tip….

Scam alert: Beware DropBox shared file links in emails

A decades-old email scam is making the rounds yet again, and it’s just as dangerous as ever.

The scam basically consists of an email containing what the sender claims is a link to a file they are sharing with you via DropBox. Just click the link and sign into your DropBox account and you’ll supposedly be able to access the file.

The problem is, the odds are overwhelming that clicking that link won’t take you to DropBox at all. It’ll actually take you to a fake DropBox look-alike web page with a fake login form on it.

If you take the bait and type your DropBox login credentials into the fake login form you’ll end up handing your login info to a scammer.

Bottom line: Unless you know in advance (and are 100% certain) that someone is sharing a file with you via DropBox, don’t click that link because the email is almost certainly a scam.

If you have reason to believe the email and share link are legitimate, I recommend that you contact the sender to verify it before clicking on the link to access the file.
