Today’s quick tech tip….

How to disable the Power button on a Windows laptop

Some laptops have the Power button right on the keyboard, making it all too easy to accidentally turn the machine off while simply trying to type something.

If you have clumsy fingers like me and you occasionally shut your laptop down by accident, there’s a very easy fix: Simply disable the Power button.

Here’s how to completely disable the Power button on a Windows laptop:

1 – Click the Start button to display the Start menu.

2 – Type the words control panel.

3 – Click on Control Panel after it pops up in the search results.

4 – Click System and Security.

5 – Find the “Power Options” section and click Change what the power buttons do.

6 – Change both settings in the “When I press the power button” field to Do nothing.

7 – Click the Save changes button.

That’s all there is to it. From now on nothing will happen when you accidentally press the Power button while typing away on your laptop’s keyboard.

(Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to shut down or restart the machine via the Start menu.)
