Today’s Quick Tip….

Is that website that won’t load in your browser really down?

Have you ever tried to visit a favorite website only to have it fail to load in your browser? It happens fairly often, and it’s rather frustrating.

But what’s even more frustrating is finding out later that the problem is on your end instead of the website’s end.

There are many possible reasons why a perfectly working website can fail to load in a browser, but you won’t know there’s a problem on your end unless you check to make sure the site is really down.

Luckily, there’s a very easy way to find out:

1 – Visit Down For Everyone Or Just Me with the browser you’re using.

2 – Type (or copy and paste) the website’s URL into the text box and click the or just me? button.

That’s all there is to it. The current “up or down” status of the site in question will be displayed on your screen right away.

If the status report says the site is actually down there’s nothing you can do on your end to get it to load in your browser. You’ll just have to wait until the site comes back online.

However, if it says the site is up (i.e. it’s only “down” for you) then you’ll know there’s a problem on your end and you’ll have to find out why the site won’t load for you. Here are a few things to try:

1 – Clear the browser cache and then check to see if the site will load. Sometimes a corrupted cached file will prevent a site from loading.

2 – Try loading the site in a different web browser. Occasionally there will be a clash between the code underlying a website and a particular browser, preventing the site from loading in that browser even though it will load in other browsers.

This doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s usually right after an update has been applied to either the website or the browser.

3 – Restart your computer and try loading the site again. Temporary glitches with a computer system can cause a site to fail to load. Restarting the machine will almost always clear up these types of transient issues.
