Q&A: Which is better, a hard drive or a much smaller SSD?

Question from Marcus:  I’ve been shopping around for a new laptop and I’ve noticed that most of the ones in my price range basically force you to choose between a 1TB hard drive or a 512GB SSD.

I’m confused about which of those two options I should choose.

I know SSDs are a lot faster than hard drives, but at the same time 1TB is a lot more storage space than 512GB. Can you tell me which one I should choose, and why?

Rick’s answer:  I’m sure plenty of other folks will disagree with me Marcus, but if forced to make a choice between a 1TB hard drive and a smaller 512GB SSD, I’ll choose the SSD every time as long as everything else is pretty much equal.

While the hard drive in your scenario would give you twice the internal storage space, the SSD will make the entire system perform faster and better.

You can always add a bunch of additional hard drive storage simply by connecting an inexpensive external USB hard drive. That setup would allow Windows to access the much-faster SSD for its normal operations while also taking advantage of the much larger storage space that you can add via the external hard drive.

In other words, you get the best of both worlds – the super-fast speed of an SSD working as the system drive and as about as much storage space as you would ever want add via the external hard drive.
