Today’s quick tech tip….
Why USB flash drives make horrible long-term storage media
If you’ve been using computers long enough to remember using floppy disks, cassette tapes or even paper punch cards for data storage, you probably love the convenience of using those super-handy USB flash drives. They truly are awesome devices.
But here’s the thing…
Those “thumb drives” really are handy and very easy to use, carry and store, but I would never recommend using them for long-term storage of important files and photos that you really wouldn’t want to lose.
Why? Because USB flash drives are incredibly unreliable. I know this because I receive requests for help with recovering files from damaged or corrupted flash drives all the time.
I always try my best to help when asked, but unfortunately there are times when those efforts ultimately end up being unsuccessful.
Also, in addition to their inherent instability, they are also pretty easy to lose.
Bottom line: If it’s important to you, don’t store it on a USB flash drive for the long-term. Use an external hard drive or SSD instead.
And for an extra bit of protection, make backup copies onto other media or store it in the cloud for redundancy.
