Portable USB hard drives make it easy to back up the hard drives in our computers and share large quantities of files among machines that aren’t on the same local network.

If you’re looking for the fastest high-capacity USB drive around, a portable Solid State Drive (SSD) would fit the bill quite nicely.

But if you’re just looking for something that’s faster than the typical USB hard drive yet doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, you can’t beat a 7200RPM USB hard drive.

There aren’t that many consumer-grade 7200RPM USB hard drives on the market right now, but I recently had the chance to check one out. [Read more…]

Review: Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 20B20011US 15.6-Inch Laptop

Posted on August 26, 2016

I’m often asked if it’s still possible to buy a new PC that comes with Windows 7, and the answer is yes. A perfect example is the excellent Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 20B20011US (#ad) laptop.

Actually, this laptop gives you a choice between two operating systems: Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

It comes with Windows 7 Pro pre-installed, but it also comes with a Windows 8 installation DVD and license. You can always replace Windows 7 with Windows 8 at no additional charge, then update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 for free.

And since we all seem to have multiple mobile devices these days, we also need a handy way to keep them all charged up and ready for use.

In an effort to simplify things and keep my desk from becoming cluttered with a dozen boxes of various types, I’ve been on the lookout for a high-quality USB 3.0 hub and charger combo unit. Well, I recently found exactly what I’ve been looking for, and more. [Read more…]

Review: Seagate Wireless Plus 2 TB Mobile Device Storage with Built-In Wi-Fi Streaming

Posted on June 20, 2016

Tablets and smart phones are amazing devices that put the power of modern computers literally in the palm of your hand. But as awesome as these gadgets are, they do have a few very frustrating limitations.

Personally, I find the most annoying limitation of the typical mobile device to be the paltry amount of storage space available.

If you think about it, even the most capacious tablets are limited to far less storage than a typical laptop. Many of these devices can connect via USB to an external hard drive, but that can be rather impractical when you’re out and about.

Well, now there’s a better solution that gives you the storage capacity of a 2 TB hard drive without having to connect a USB cable or AC power adapter. [Read more…]

Posted on June 17, 2016

You are probably already aware that a Solid State Drive (SSD) is a LOT faster than even the fastest spinning hard drives, and they are getting cheaper all the time.

But did you know that SSDs vary in speed from model to model?

Well, they do, and they’re getting faster all the time. And SandDisk has one of the fastest consumer grade SSD’s out there, SanDisk Extreme PRO.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best SSDs I have ever tested. [Read more…]
