Question from Shelby:  I bought a new computer the other day.

The salesman told me I won’t need to plug it into a surge protector because the power supply automatically protects it from over-voltage.

Is he right?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can I copy the files from a broken laptop?

Posted on January 13, 2024

Question from Troy:  I have a three year old Windows 10 laptop that has a broken screen.

The screen is smashed pretty good and it won’t light up at all.

I checked and it would cost more to have the screen replaced than the laptop is really worth.

I plan to just junk it, but I have a lot of files on there that I’d really like to get off of it first.

I want to take up portrait photography and I’ve read that prime lenses are better than zoom lenses for that.

I was hoping you could recommend a really good portrait lens that’ll work with my camera.  [Read more…]

Question from Mona:  My 20 year old son came in to visit me for the weekend and he borrowed my computer while he was here.

After he left I noticed that the default search engine in my Chrome browser had been changed from Google to Bing.

I really prefer Google so I’d appreciate it a bunch if you can tell me how to switch it back. What do I need to do?  [Read more…]
