Q&A: How can I find out if my computer has a 64 bit CPU?

Posted on October 24, 2016

Question from Bobby E.:  I bought a computer at an estate sale a few days ago. The lady told me her dad had built the computer himself a couple of years ago but she didn’t know anything about it. I think I got a good deal because it only cost me $30.

Apparently there’s no operating system on the hard drive, and I’d like to install Windows 10 on it and use this PC as a backup Internet-only computer.

What I’d like to find out is if the CPU is a 32 bit or 64 bit chip. If it has a 64 bit CPU I’d like to install the 64 bit version of Windows 10. How can I find out?

I really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Q&A: Why do some websites think my brother’s PC and my Mac have the same IP address?

Posted on October 22, 2016

internetQuestion from Merrill D.:  I’m a member of two different gaming forums that I post on almost every day.

My little brother wants to sign up for them too but when he tries they always tell him his IP address already has an account associated with it (I assume that it’s my account).

Why do those websites think our computers both have the same IP address? We have Charter Internet and a modem/router combo box if that makes a difference.

Q&A: How can I stop receiving the responses to a group text on my iPhone?

Posted on October 21, 2016

ios-messaging-iconQuestion from Billie P.:  I was included in a group text last night and I spent the next hour and a half listening to my iPhone beep almost constantly as the responses came in.

I wasn’t even interested in the subject they were discussing but the beeps kept coming anyway. It annoyed me so much I ended up turning my phone off.

Is there any way to block everyone’s responses to a group text on an iPhone 6s?

Q&A: Is csrss.exe a virus?

Posted on September 29, 2016

microsoft-windowsQuestion from David K.:  My computer has Windows 7 and there is a file named csrss.exe running according to Task Manager. Actually, there are two of them. They are in system.

Some websites say this file is a virus, and others say it isn’t. How do I know?

Rick’s answer:  David, csrss.exe is a critical system file, not a virus. The filename is actually an acronym that stands for Client/Server Run-Time Subsystem.

It is perfectly normal to see this file listed in Task Manager (often twice) as it loads into memory every time Windows starts up.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can my wireless router be upgraded to make it an AC router?

Question from Rhonda P.:  I’ve heard that you can upgrade a router’s software to make it more up to date.

I have a Netgear RangeMax WNDR3700 that still works great and I was wondering if it can be upgraded to make it work like an “AC” router? That way I wouldn’t have to buy a new one.

Thanks for your help!
