Q&A: How can I keep my Android tablet from turning the screen off while I’m reading?

Posted on September 12, 2017

keepiton-logoQuestion from Joey:  Hi Rick. I have a problem that I need your help with.

I use an el-cheapo Android tablet that I bought at a closeout store to read a couple of news websites every morning. It does the job just fine, but the screen keeps turning off on me before I can finish reading a long article.

I have the screen timeout set to the maximum setting, but the screen still blanks out on me while I’m reading. Is there any way I can keep the screen lit up until I finish my daily reading? It’s annoying having to turn the screen back on ever few minutes.

Q&A: Why won’t my external hard drive work through my USB hub?

Posted on September 8, 2017

powered-usb-hubQuestion from Erica P.:  Hi Rick! I have a question that I hope you can answer for me.

I have an older Seagate 200 GB external hard drive that has lots of wonderful family photos that I’ve scanned over the years stored on it.

The drive works fine when I plug it directly into a USB port, but it won’t work at all when I plug it into my 4-port USB hub. I really need to use the hub because my PC is under my desk and the USB ports are a pain to get to.

Do you think I need to buy a new hub? I don’t think the one I have is bad because I have my printer and webcam plugged into it, and they both work just fine. Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Q&A: Is it safe to max out my RAM’s clock speed in the BIOS?

Posted on August 28, 2017

corsair-vengeance-ramQuestion from Nathan P.:  I just finished building my first computer from a bare-bones kit.

Everything worked fine from the moment I first powered it up, but the BIOS says the RAM is running at 1333 MHz even though the RAM sticks are rated at 1600 MHz.

My CPU is an Intel Core i5 and the RAM sticks are Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 / 1600 MHz. Is it safe to bump up the clock speed in the BIOS to match the RAM’s rating of 1600 MHz?

This is my first build, and I seriously don’t want to fry anything by overclocking the RAM if there’s some reason the motherboard is running it at a slower speed..

Q&A: Is there any way to make Chrome show passwords as you type them?

Posted on August 15, 2017

showpassword-extension-logoQuestion from Julia V.:  I have a question about passwords Rick.

I use pretty long passwords that contain special characters. I often make a mistake when typing a password and have to re-enter the password again. That’s very frustrating to say the least.

Is there a setting in Chrome that will let you review a password you typed before pressing the Enter key or clicking the Login button?

Q&A: Why is my computer only recognizing 4GB of RAM even though I installed 8GB?

Posted on August 11, 2017

ramQuestion from Shawn:  Hi Rick. Having recently read your post about adding RAM to speed up your PC, I just bought two 4GB Crucial RAM sticks to upgrade my Dell 755 desktop computer to 8GB.

This PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit so it should recognize the entire 8GB, but for some reason it’s only recognizing 4GB. Do you think I have a bad RAM stick?
