Q&A: How can I make my laptop show my name on the network?

Posted on July 6, 2022

Question from Luella:  My sister bought a new laptop a while back and after using it for a couple of days she decided she hates Windows 11.

She was going to return it and buy a Mac but I told her I would just buy the laptop from her since I had been planning to buy one anyway.

The thing is this laptop shows up on our company network under my sister’s name and I don’t know how to fix it. I know our IT guy could do it but he’s out on vacation and won’t be back until the end of the month.

Would you mind telling me how to change the name on this laptop from my sister’s name to my name?  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I see who recently accepted my friend request on Facebook?

Posted on June 26, 2022

Question from Mira:  Hi Rick. You might think I’m not very bright after you hear my question, but I hope not lol.

Anyway, I recently sent Facebook friend requests to several people who are on our old high school reunion list.

One of the guys on that list accepted my friend request last night, but now I can’t find the notification where he accepted it and I can’t remember his name.

And before you ask, I’ve lost the list I got the names from in the first place!

Is there any way to see a list of my most recently added friends? [Read more…]

Question from Camilla:  I’ve always owned Windows computers but my daughter talked me into trying a MacBook after my years-old Toshiba laptop died a few weeks ago.

I tried using Safari for several days but I just can’t get used it it.

I finally broke down and installed Firefox because I’ve used it for years and I’m just more comfortable with it.

Anyway, the links I click always open in Safari but I want them to open in Firefox instead.

How do I make Firefox the default web browser on my new MacBook?

Q&A: How can I limit the types of notifications I receive from Windows Security?

Posted on June 16, 2022

Question from Danny:  I’ve been reading your newsletters for over a year now, and I always learn something I can use from them.

I’ve read in several of your recent posts that Microsoft Defender and the free version of Malwarebytes make a good combination for security on a Windows PC.

When my McAfee came up for renewal I removed it and installed the free Malwarebytes, and so far I’ve been happy with that setup.

One thing I’m not happy about though is all the notifications I’m getting from Windows Security. Every day I get several of them, and most of the ones I get aren’t even important.

How can I limit the notifications I receive from Windows Security to just the ones that are truly needed?  [Read more…]
