Review: Site 5 VPS Web Hosting

Posted on December 21, 2016

site-5-logoWhen I built my first website back in 2003 I was pretty much in over my head. Even though it was a very basic site, I still found myself struggling with most every aspect of building and maintaining it.

One of the things I struggled with the most was choosing a good web hosting company. I tried a number of hosting companies and plans over the next couple of years, and finally found one that gave me the support I needed as I expanded the site and began to build more traffic to it. That company was Hostgator, and I can honestly say they are great!

As I learned more and built more websites and kept adding content to them, the traffic my sites were receiving on a daily basis began to grow exponentially. It soon became apparent that I desperately needed to move my sites onto a dedicated server. I chose the most economical plan that Hostgator offered, and was quite pleased with the results.  [Read more…]

Google to start penalizing pages that display interstitial ads and pop-ups

Posted on December 13, 2016

If you own a blog or other type of website, you probably know how important it is to rank well in the Google search results.

Like it or not, the majority of a typical site’s visitors usually come from Google. That means anything that causes your site’s pages to tank in the Google search results is a bad thing indeed!

Last month Google announced that they’ll soon start ranking web pages based upon the content found on the mobile versions of the websites “crawled” by their bots. Well, now they’re taking their emphasis on mobile friendliness to an entirely new level.

Here is a direct quote from a recent Google blog post:  [Read more…]

ATTN Bloggers: Your blog’s Google rankings could soon nosedive if it isn’t mobile-friendly.

Posted on December 6, 2016

google-logoAre you a blogger who has been putting off the task of making your blog mobile-friendly? If so, I strongly recommend that you get it done ASAP!

In February of last year Google announced that mobile-friendly websites would soon start ranking higher in their search results than non-mobile-friendly sites.

Well, they are now ready to take their mobile-friendly policy to a new level by using mobile pages to determine the rankings in their search results.  [Read more…]

How to delete old ‘Post Revisions’ in WordPress

Posted on September 7, 2016

wordpress-logo“Post Revisions” is a very handy WordPress feature that was first released along with WordPress version 2.6, and for active bloggers it can be a veritable lifesaver.

In a nutshell, it creates a new backup copy of the post you’re editing every time you click the “Save Draft” button. That makes it extremely easy to revert back to any previous version of a post at any time.

But there’s a problem with Post Revisions: They can grow your WordPress database exponentially if you tend to make several revisions to every post you write.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is there a way to make a sticky post in WordPress stop being sticky on a certain date?

Posted on August 29, 2016

wordpress-logoQuestion from Brandon H.:  I make some of my WordPress posts sticky, but sometimes I forget to go back and “unstick” them when they no longer need to be stuck to the home page.

I find it irritating to see a sticky post hang around after it no longer deserves to be sticky, and I’m sure my readers do as well.

Do you know of a way to make the “sticky” status of a post expire after a certain length of time or on a certain date? If you can tell me how to do this, my life will become a lot easier lol.
