What’s new….

My Monthly Tech Giveaway is back!

Long-time subscribers to my daily Rick’s Tech Tips Newsletter will remember that I used to feature a monthly Tech Gadget Giveaway that all active subscribers were eligible to win.

I ended up having to suspend that giveaway due to the onset of the Covid pandemic, but now is the time to bring it back – better than ever.

The prizes featured in the new giveaway will include a combination of items I received for testing and review and brand new items that will provided directly by partner companies.

Winners will be selected at random. All Standard subscribers have an equal chance to win. All Premium subscribers have two chances (their email addresses are added to the pot twice).

November’s winner will receive a Brother DCPL2550DW Multifunction Monochrome Laser Printer, Scanner and Copier. Click here for details.

Today’s featured tech tip….

Does your child use a school-issued laptop?

If so, I recommend that you teach him/her to only use that laptop for tasks and projects that are directly related to school work and activities.

The IT departments in most schools keep pretty close tabs on what the school’s computers are used for, and there are any number of otherwise harmless activities that could cause your child to run afoul of school rules and regulations.

Here’s a good rule of thumb…

If your child needs to do some class-related online research, write a term paper or do most anything else that’s required as part of the school curriculum, it’s fine to complete those activities on the school laptop. That’s its intended purpose, after all.

However, if your child wants to watch YouTube videos, listen to music, chat with friends or do most anything online that isn’t school-related, it’s probably best to use a personal family-owned device for those activities.

All of the above being said, some school systems are more lenient with how students can use their school-issued laptops than others. I recommend that you check with your school to find out for sure what’s allowed and what isn’t.
