Today’s quick tech tip….

Q&A: Why doesn’t my microphone work on my PC?

Question from Donna:  I bought a new USB microphone for my Windows 10 desktop computer but I can’t get it to work.

The mic shows up as being enabled in the sound settings, but it never records anything.

Can you help me get it to work? Thanks.

Rick’s answer:  Donna, it sounds to me like microphone access has been denied globally via your PC’s settings. Luckily, it’s very easy to check to see (and fix) if that’s indeed the problem. Here’s how:

1 – Click the Start button, then type the words microphone access.

2 – Click Choose which apps can access your microphone.

3 – If the line directly above the “Change” button reads “Microphone access for this device is off”, click Change and toggle that setting on.

I have a feeling that will fix your non-working mic issue, Donna. However, if it doesn’t just let me know and I’ll tell you what to check next.

Update from Donna:  That fixed it, Rick. Thanks a lot.
