Today’s quick tech tip….

How to opt out of the Amazon Sidewalk neighborhood network program

Do you have an Amazon Echo or any device made by Ring?

If so, your Amazon account probably has your devices set up to participate in the Amazon Sidewalk program.

In a nutshell, Amazon Sidewalk is a low-power wireless network that allows your compatible devices to communicate with other devices using the Internet connections of other Amazon Sidewalk participants in your local area.

Of course the flip-side of this is your neighbors (and even complete strangers) can do the same via your Internet connection.

While this is generally safe, some folks are uncomfortable with people they don’t know accessing the Internet via their Internet connection, especially if they often come close to exceeding their “metered” monthly Internet data allotment.

If you’re currently participating in the Amazon Sidewalk program (you might be and not even know it) and you’d rather opt out of it, you can easily do so by following the instructions listed on this Amazon ‘Help’ page.

Once you’ve disabled Amazon Sidewalk on your account, your devices should no longer connect to a local Amazon Sidewalk network (if one exists in your area) and devices belonging to other people should no longer be able to communicate via your Internet connection.
