Greenshot – My favorite screenshot utility

Posted on August 12, 2018

greenshot-logoMost Windows users know that pressing the Print Screen key will create an exact image of everything on the current screen and place it on the Windows clipboard, thereby creating a “screenshot” image.

I’ve tried several third-part screenshot utilities over the years, but my favorite by far is a nifty little free program called Greenshot. In fact, I think it’s the best thing since that $50 bill that I found laying on the riverbank back when I was a kid!

There are so many things to love about Greenshot, but there are two in particular that make it extremely useful:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I take a screenshot on my Galaxy S5?

Posted on June 13, 2014

samsung-galaxy-s5Question from Elisa M.:  Hi Rick. I just ditched my old phone that I’ve had for years and bought a new Samsung Galaxy S5. I like taking screenshots with my phone from time to time, but I can’t figure out how to do it with this one.

Can you tell this dummy how to take a screenshot with a Galaxy S5? LOL – and thanks!

Rick’s answer:  You’re not a dummy Elisa. If you don’t know how to do something, you don’t know how to do it. That’s why every day offers new opportunities to learn. And believe me, I learn something new every day!

To answer your question, it’s pretty easy to capture a screenshot on the S5 once you know how. Here are the steps:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I capture a screenshot on my Nook HD and email it to a friend?

Posted on February 21, 2014

nook-hdQuestion from Cassie:  Hello Rick. I have a Nook HD and I like it pretty well. I’d really like to buy a Kindle Fire HD but it’ll be a while before I can afford one.

In the meantime I really need to be able to take screenshots on my Nook HD every once in a while and email them to my friends. I’m pretty sure this can be done but I can’t figure out how to do it. Can you tell me?

Rick’s answer:  The Kindle Fire HD is a fantastic tablet Cassie, but the Nook HD is a good one as well. I hope yours continues serving you well until you’re ready to buy your Kindle. When that time comes, you might want to check out the Kindle Fire HDX as well as the regular HD model.

To answer to your question, it’s actually pretty easy to capture a screenshot on your Nook HD. Here’s how to do it:  [Read more…]

Q&A: Where are screenshots stored on my computer?

Posted on June 4, 2013

prt-scrn-keyQuestion from Belinda L.:  Hi Rick. I remember reading somewhere that if you press key combination Ctrl+Print Screen the computer will save a screenshot image of whatever is on the screen at the time. But when I press those keys nothing happens.

I’ve searched my documents folder, the desktop and everywhere else I can think to look but I can’t find a screenshot image. What am I doing wrong? My PC uses Windows 7.

Rick‘s answer:  You’re not doing anything wrong Belinda, you’re just not finishing the procedure.

When you press the Ctrl+Print Screen key combination (Note: the Print Screen key is sometimes labeled PrtScrn or something similar) it saves an image of the screen contents to the Windows Clipboard which is nothing more than a small section of RAM set aside as a buffer.

In order to convert that screenshot into an actual image file you’ll need to open your favorite image editor (Paint, Photoshop Express etc.) and paste the contents of the Clipboard into it.

Once you have the screenshot displayed in the image editor, you can crop it, resize it or edit it just like any other image and then save it as a JPEG, BMP or other type of image file.

Since you’re using Windows 7 you have Microsoft Paint already installed on your system by default. Here’s how to use the Ctrl+Print Screen key combination and MS Paint in order to capture a screenshot and save it as an image file:  [Read more…]

From time to time we need to capture an image of the items currently being displayed on the computer screen.  This is called a “screenshot”, and it can display the contents of the entire screen or just a portion of it. Windows makes it easy to create a screenshot of the entire screen. Here’s how: [Read more…]
