Make Ubuntu Linux work the way you want it to with Ubuntu Tweak

Posted on December 4, 2013

ubuntu-tweak-logoIf you have recently taken the plunge and replaced Microsoft Windows with Linux, you are probably marveling at the increase in your computer’s speed and appreciating the fact that you don’t have to run an anti-virus program. For sure, Linux offers plenty of advantages over Windows.

One advantage it has never offered however is a simple way to tweak your Linux installation to your liking. You can easily use Google to find command line tweaks for most anything that you can think of, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a GUI system tweaker that uses the mouse instead of the keyboard and command line?

Well, if you’re running the “Ubuntu” flavor of Linux you can now download a very good one, for free.  [Read more…]

How to set Ubuntu Linux to boot up without requiring your password

Posted on August 12, 2013

ubuntu-logoLinux is one of the most secure operating systems in use today, and one of the things that makes it so secure is its insistence that you enter a password before doing anything that can possibly cause harm to your system.

But if you’re the only person who has access to your computer, you really don’t need to enter a password just to load the operating system.

If you use Ubuntu (the most popular Linux distro), you can easily set it to bypass the login screen and boot directly to the Desktop. Here’s how:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do you kill a stuck process in Ubuntu Linux?

Posted on July 31, 2013

ubuntu-logoQuestion from Keith:  I recently built a computer from scratch and I decided to install Ubuntu Linux on it instead of buying a copy of Windows. It’s a pretty steep learning curve for me, but I’m enjoying it immensely.

I have a problem that I hope you can help me with. I’m using Firefox for my web browser and every now and then it hangs up, causing me to have to reboot the computer to clear it. Back in my Windows days I used the Task Manager to kill a stuck process, but something tells me that it won’t be quite that simple with Linux.

My question is this: How do you kill a stuck process in Ubuntu? Is there a Linux utility that I can download that works something like the Windows Task Manager?

ubuntu-logoOver time Ubuntu has gradually become the most popular flavor of Linux among users who have decided to make the switch from Microsoft Windows, and for good reason.

In addition to its fast and easy installation, Ubuntu also offers a more “Windows-like” user interface than many of the other Linux distros out there.  [Read more…]

How to change the boot order on a dual-boot Microsoft Windows/Ubuntu Linux system

Posted on January 25, 2013

change-boot-orderIf you have a dual-boot system which lets you boot your PC into either Microsoft Windows or Ubuntu Linux, odds are the default O.S. is Ubuntu.

If you boot the computer into Ubuntu most of the time, this works out great. You can just press the PC’s power button and go grab a snack or something, then return to an Ubuntu Desktop ready and waiting for you.

But if you boot into Windows more than Ubuntu, you have to sit at the computer and wait for the Boot Menu to appear so you can instruct the computer to boot into Windows instead of Ubuntu. If you find yourself having to do this on a regular basis you can easily change the boot order of the operating systems on your PC and make Windows the default. [Read more…]
