About that “I was wondering why my news feed looks so different recently” post that everyone is sharing on Facebook…

Posted on February 6, 2018

As you probably know our Facebook newsfeeds are constantly being filled with posts of dire warnings to “do this” or “do that” or something bad will happen.

They usually ask you to share the post with your friends as well.

And as you also probably know, the vast majority of those “share this or suffer the consequences” type of posts are hoaxes and scams.

That being said, every now and then one of these posts will actually be based upon actual facts.

One case in point is a post that’s been making the rounds of late. The actual text may vary a bit, but it looks something like this:  [Read more…]

Q&A: I received an instant message from ‘Facebook User’. How can I find out who sent it?

Posted on December 12, 2017

Question from Connie G.:  I have a question about Facebook and I’m really hoping you an answer it for me.

Yesterday morning I received a very intriguing private message from someone telling me we went to school together.

They said they saw my name pop up after I left a comment on a picture that a mutual friend had posted and they’d like to reconnect with me.

The thing is there’s no name listed for the sender. All it says is “Facebook User”.

I can’t reply to the message (It says “You cannot reply to this conversation”) and there’s no link to click to look at their profile.

I’m curious as to who this person could be since I graduated from high school over 20 years ago. Is there any way to find out who sent me that message?

Heads up: Facebook could soon be asking you to upload a “Selfie” to prove your identity

Posted on December 6, 2017

As you probably know by now, Facebook is a virtual playground for scammers, hackers and thieves from every spot on the globe.

The miscreants seem to be everywhere these days, hacking and cloning accounts right and left.

And as we all found out during the last presidential election, they’re even using Facebook to spread fake news.

Truth be told, rarely a day goes by when I fail to receive at least a couple of desperate messages from folks asking for help in cleaning up a compromised or cloned account.

Well, Facebook has recently devised a plan that should (hopefully) stop scammers and hackers in their tracks and prevent them from generally using their platform for mischief. This is how it works:  [Read more…]

Scam alert: Don’t fall for the ‘Help Hurricane Harvey Victims’ scams that are making the rounds

Posted on August 31, 2017

By now you’ve surely seen the heartbreaking images and videos coming out of the Houston, Texas area. Hurricane Harvey has almost completely devastated that area, and it isn’t finished yet.

Sadly, dozens of our fellow citizens and an untold number of pets are already known to have lost their lives in the flood, and those numbers are only expected to grow as the waters eventually recede.

What’s more, the scope and scale of the property damage is absolutely staggering. Hundreds of thousands of people have had to flee their homes and many of them will never be able to return.  [Read more…]

RicksDailyTips Newsletter for July 1, 2017 – 9 of my favorite tips for using Facebook

Posted on July 1, 2017

Hello again. I hope you had a great week!

Facebook has risen from its humble beginnings in Mark Zuckerberg’s college dorm room to become one of the most powerful and most-used entities on the Internet.

For example, did you know that Facebook now has over 2 billion registered users? That’s an astounding number considering there are only about 7.5  billion people living on the entire planet!

Even more astounding to me is how the folks at Facebook keep the site up and running as smoothly as they do given the mind-boggling number of people who are actively using the site at any moment in time.  [Read more…]
