Q&A: How do I install WordPress on my local PC?

Posted on May 15, 2021

Question from Clara:  I’ve been writing a WordPress blog that discusses a variety of family issues for over two years now.

I recently installed an update to a plugin that completely broke my blog, and since I couldn’t log in to my WordPress account I couldn’t remove the bad plugin.

I searched for a solution on Google for three days and I finally found your excellent blog post explaining how to disable the bad plugin using an FTP program, and it saved me. Thank you for that!!

Now, my question: I heard that it’s possible to install WordPress on my local PC so I can test new plugins and updates without having to chance breaking my real blog again. Can you tell me how to do that?

Question from Ellen P.:  I hope you can help me Rick, and I thank you in advance for trying.

I travel frequently and give video presentations as part of my work, and an issue has arisen. My old laptop got stolen and I had to buy a new one.

The new laptop doesn’t have a VGA connector which is what my projector uses. Do you know of any way that I can connect the HDMI port on my laptop to the VGA socket on the projector?

Q&A: Why does my laptop say Windows is not genuine?

Posted on May 14, 2021

Question from Liam:  My wife and I recently went to a flea market to look for some things for our house.

I ended up buying a used Lenovo ThinkPad T400 with Windows 7 on it.

It’s obvious that it’s a pretty old laptop but it seems to work well.

I didn’t notice it when it was running at the flea market but there’s a message in the corner of the screen saying “This copy of Windows is not genuine”.

What does that mean? Is it a problem? [Read more…]

Q&A: Why can’t I see the posts and info of my ‘Followers’ on Facebook?

Posted on May 12, 2021

Question from Curtis:  I have a quick question for you.

I followed your instructions to see who is following me on Facebook and I saw that I indeed have a bunch of followers.

When I click on their names to look at their profiles I can only see the info on some of them. The other profiles have a message that says:

DO YOU KNOW [XXXXXX]?

To see what he/she shares with friends, send him/her a friend request.

I’m confused. If they’re following me shouldn’t I be able to see the stuff on their profile?

Also, do you recommend that I block those people just in case their profiles are infected with a virus or something?
