Free ebook: “Windows 8 for Dummies”

Posted on December 24, 2014

windows-8-for-dummies-coverLike it or not, Windows 8/8.1 is here to stay until Windows 10 hits the market next year, so we might as well get used to it unless we’re willing to switch to Linux, a Chromebook or a Mac. (#ad)

When Microsoft set about designing the look and feel of Windows 8, they wanted to make it a radical departure from previous version of Windows. And they sure did a great job at it! In fact, many experienced Windows users feel completely lost the first time they boot up Windows 8.

In addition to doing lots of things differently than previous versions did them, Windows 8 also includes a ton of new features, settings and menus that never existed before. And to make matters even worse, there is no user manual in the box, which means you’re going to have to learn all about Windows 8’s mysterious pieces and parts all on your own.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Why does my Windows 7 say it’s not genuine?

Posted on December 18, 2014

windows-7Question from Carol:  Hi Rick. I paid a man I used to work with $220 to install Windows 7 Ultimate on my Dell laptop (it originally came with Windows Vista). Now every time I boot the computer into Windows it tells me that my Windows isn’t genuine.

I tried to call him to ask him to fix this error, but his phone has been disconnected and I don’t know how to get in touch with him. What should I do to get this fixed? I really appreciate your help.

Microsoft officially ends support for Windows XP

Posted on April 8, 2014

windows-xp-logoWell, today is the big day. As of today, Microsoft has officially stopped supporting Windows XP, a move that effectively ends the useful life of the most popular version of Windows ever for the vast majority of users.

While there are circumstances under which XP can still be safely used, the millions of people who have their XP machines connected to the Internet should probably make the move to either a different operating system or a new computer.  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I get started repairing computers?

Posted on January 18, 2014

dell-dimension-e521Question from Eric:  Hi Rick. I want to ask you where can I start on getting my old Dell Dimension E521 Desktop Tower working again? I don’t have a hard drive for it because the one that was in it went in my family’s fairly new HP Desktop computer and my mom doesn’t want me to take the hard drive out.

I don’t have an RGB cable and a monitor for it to work but I do have a wired keyboard, wired mouse, a power cable, and speakers, that’s it.

My older brother put a wanted ad on Craigslist for me for free computers so I could work on some older desktop/laptops so I could get used to repairing/rebuilding computers.

I was thinking about when I get some older computers I could work on them then maybe try to sell them in the summer this year. I just want to make some money to help my family as best as I can because we’re going through a rough time with our financial status. I’ll appreciate any advice you can give me.

Your friend, Eric.

Q&A: What should I do with my Dell Inspiron Mini 12 after Microsoft abandons Windows XP?

Posted on December 12, 2013

dell-inspiron-mini-12Question from Derick G.:  I read a news report that indicated that Windows XP will become unusable when Microsoft abandons it this spring. I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 12 that’s running Windows XP Home Edition that still works like a champ.

What would you recommend that I do with this computer? Sell it? Scavenge it for spare parts? Just recycle it? I really have no idea how much it’s worth, either in whole or in parts.
