Today’s featured tech tip….

Reminder: You don’t need to ‘defrag’ an SSD

Most long-time Windows users are familiar with the Defrag utility that optimizes the PC’s hard drive and puts all the various pieces of fragmented files back together again.

I’ve recently been receiving emails from folks asking if they need to defrag the SSDs in their machines.

Well, the answer is no, for these reasons:

1 – SSDs don’t need to be defragged because fragmented files on SSDs don’t cause the same kinds of issues they cause for spinning hard drives.

2 – Excessive writes to an SSD’s flash memory cells can cause the SSD to fail prematurely.

Bottom line: If your computer has an SSD instead of a hard drive you will never need to defrag it.
