Today’s quick tech tip….

Q&A: Do I need to back up WhatsApp before I change phones?

Question from Dinah:  I’m getting ready to buy a new Android phone to replace the one I’ve had for over three years.

I use WhatsApp all the time and I have what must be thousands of messages that I really don’t want to lose.

Do I need to back up my WhatsApp messages or will they automatically be there when I sign in to WhatsApp on the new phone?

If I do need to back them up, how do I do that?

Rick’s answer:  Dinah, since you have an Android phone your WhatsApp messages are probably already backed up onto Google Drive. To find out, just sign into Google Drive using the login credentials for the Google account that’s associated with your phone.

If you don’t see the WhatsApp backups in your Google Drive storage you’ll need to back up your messages to Google Drive manually. Here’s how:

1 – Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the upper-right corner of the screen.

2 – Tap Settings.

3 – Tap Chats.

4 – Tap Chat Backup.

5 – Scroll down and tap Google Account to connect your Google Drive account to WhatsApp.

6 – After your Google Drive account is connected to WhatsApp, tap the green Back up button to initiate the backup procedure.

That’s all there is to it. Once the backup is complete you’ll be able to buy your new phone and install WhatsApp on it, then download your stored messages from Google Drive to your phone.
