Today’s featured tech tip….
Why you’ll never need to defragment an SSD
Most long-time Windows users are familiar with the ‘Defrag’ utility that optimizes the PC’s hard drive and puts all the various pieces of fragmented files back together again.
Well, I have good news for you…
If your PC is running Windows 10 or Windows 11 you really don’t need to manually ‘defrag’ your hard drive because the operating system does a pretty good job at cleaning things up without your help.
That being said, you can still manually run the Defrag utility if you wish, and it just might help a tiny bit (though probably not enough to make it truly worth your while).
Just be aware that you should never, ever defrag a solid state drive (SSD).
Why? Two reasons:
1 – SSDs don’t need to be defragged in the first place because fragmented files on SSDs aren’t really a problem.
2 – Excessive ‘writes’ to flash memory cells can cause an SSD to fail prematurely.
Bottom line: If your computer has an SSD instead of a hard drive you really need to leave the Defrag utility alone.
