Today’s Quick Tip….

New malware puts your stored passwords at serious risk

I’ve written several blog posts in recent years about the dangers of allowing your web browsers to store your passwords, including this post that sums up the various dangers.

Now there’s yet another threat to stored passwords. It’s a new strain of malware called Redline that’s actively stealing the passwords that users have stored in their Chromium-based web browsers (Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, among others).

In a nutshell, if you allow your Chromium-based browser to store your passwords and aut0-login is enabled, your passwords are at serious risk of being stolen.

I won’t go into the details of Redline here but you can read all about it in this article from AhnLab, the Internet security company that discovered the malware.

As regular readers of my tech blog and this newsletter know, I don’t recommend the use of ANY password manager, and that includes the ones that are integrated with web browsers.

This extremely dangerous Redline malware is just the latest in a long list of reasons why.

If you’re currently allowing your Chromium-based browser to store your passwords, I strongly recommend that you stop.

You’ll find instructions for removing your stored passwords from Google Chrome and  Microsoft Edge at the following links:

  • Chrome
  • Edge

Do you frequently hit your keyboard’s ‘Caps Lock’ key by mistake and end up ‘shouting’ everything you type? If so, you can completely disable the ‘Caps Lock’ key if you rarely use it. This post explains how.

• Q&A: Can I login to Windows 11 without having to enter a password?

A reader asks for help with forcing his Windows 11 PC to skip the login screen and boot directly to the Desktop. This post has step-by-step instructions.
