Today’s Quick Tip….

How to avoid tipping off burglars about your upcoming vacation

If you’ve been using social media for more than 5 minutes, you’ve no doubt seen lots of status updates similar to the following:

“We just arrived at the airport. So glad our trip to Jamaica is finally underway! See ya’ll in 10 days!”

Most people would read something like this and think nothing of it, but a thief could read it and immediately start making plans to pay your home a little visit sometime during the next 9 days.

While it’s certainly understandable that one would want to share the good news about a well-deserved vacation with their friends, is it really wise to broadcast it to the world via the Internet?

Sure, you trust our friends not to rob you blind while you’re gone, but what about your friends’ friends?

Even if you have your privacy settings configured to share your Facebook posts with just your “friends”, how do you know they won’t share your vacation plans with their friends?

And how do you know that all of their friends are trustworthy?

For that matter, how do you know that everyone on your own Friends List is trustworthy?

After all, do you even really know all your Facebook friends well enough to trust them with the virtual key to your house? If your Friends List is typical, the answer is probably no.

My recommendation is to quietly and discreetly embark on your trip and enjoy your time away to the max. Then once you return home you can post those envy-inducing photos of you relaxing on some tropical beach or playing the one-eyed bandits in Vegas to your heart’s desire.

Are you a ‘hunt-and-peck’ typist? This post explains how you can ‘hunt-and-peck’ even when you’re in a dark room.
