Scam alert: Those ads for massive SSDs on Facebook are scams

If you’ve been on Facebook lately you’ve probably seen sponsored posts advertising incredibly large, but portable solid state drives (SSDs) for sale.

Oddly, these ads don’t mention a ridiculously low price as most fraudulent Facebook ads do. They simply say the drives are 50% off.

I guess they figure that “savings” plus the fact that the drive has an enormous amount of storage will be enough to draw people in.  [Read more…]

Scam alert: Be wary of calls you receive from ‘Microsoft’ or ‘Apple’

A very dangers scam is making the rounds again, and it’s one that you really need to be aware of. It works something like this:

You receive a phone call from someone who claims to work for either Microsoft or Apple tech support.

The name of the department the caller uses might vary, but he’ll either hint that he works for Microsoft or Apple, or just blatantly come right out and say so.

The problem is, he doesn’t work for either of those companies. He’s actually a scammer out to make a quick buck.  [Read more…]

I’m sure you’ve heard about all the hacks that are taking place these days.

It seems like every time we turn around there’s another company reporting a major hack that potentially compromised the personal and financial information of their customers.

Some of the most recent hacks resulted in some of the largest security breaches in history, and unfortunately scammers who weren’t even in on those attacks soon began taking advantage of the fear and confusion they created.

Scam alert: Beware scams offering a sweet deal on Internet service

New U.S. and state government programs aimed at expanding rural broadband Internet access have Internet Service Providers (ISPs) expanding into new areas, resulting in new high speed Internet options for rural consumers.

Of course that’s a good thing if you happen to live in an area where your only viable Internet options are satellite (and if you’re lucky, DSL).

After all, it’s always good when consumers are provided with real choices for higher quality service at a better price.

Unfortunately, as always happens in situations like this, these expanding Internet service options are being exploited by scammers looking to make a fast buck off as many innocent victims as they possibly can.  [Read more…]
