Review: Automatic Smart Driving Assistant

Posted on November 20, 2014

automatic-smart-driving-assistantPeople have been driving cars for well over a century now, and for most of that time there was precious little we could do with our cars except simply get from point A to Point B. But modern technology has brought newer automobiles into the 21st century.

Every car built since 1996 includes a data port that outputs a plethora of info to a hand-held scanner. This data port is most often used by mechanics and car dealers, but a new class of hardware/app packages puts all the info that was previously only available to the pros in the hands of the average driver.

I recently had the opportunity to check out one of these handy gadgets, and I really like it.  [Read more…]

Review: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III SSD

Posted on November 10, 2014

samsung-840-evo-1tb-ssdI’ve written several posts in the past explaining how replacing your PC’s hard drive with a solid state drive (SSD) is the best upgrade you can make for the money, and that’s still the case today.

The only real drawback to upgrading to an SSD has always been the real possibility of sacrificing valuable storage space in exchange for an SSD’s blazing speed.

The good news however is the capacities of solid state drives are steadily increasing even as their prices continue to drop.

Nowadays you can buy a super-fast SSD with plenty of storage without having to pay a small fortune. A great example is the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III SSD.  [Read more…]

Review: Dell Inspiron i3531-1200BK 15.6-Inch Laptop

Modern laptops are becoming more powerful all the time. More RAM and hard drive space along with faster CPUs make many of them true desktop replacement PCs, and there seems to be no end to the enhancements in sight.

But not everyone needs the fastest, most powerful laptop on the block. If you just need a laptop that does a good job at surfing the Internet, checking email, watching Youtube videos and making simple edits to photos, a good budget model should serve you quite well.

The Dell Inspiron i3531-1200BK (#ad) is a 15.6 inch laptop that will do everything mentioned above, and more. While it won’t be setting any speed records, it’s plenty fast enough and powerful enough to do what the average Internet user needs for a budget laptop to do.  [Read more…]

Review: PC Matic

Posted on October 28, 2014

It seems that you can’t turn on your TV these days without seeing a commercial for PC Matic, especially the one in which the company’s founder and CEO touts the software’s “superior” virus protection.

And of course there’s the ever-present pitch aimed at users of the now-abandoned Windows XP.

Upon the request of several of this blog’s readers, I decided to put PC Matic to the test.  [Read more…]

Do you have cable Internet? Save big by buying your own cable modem!

If you get your Internet service through Comcast, Charter or some other cable TV company, you are probably paying a hefty monthly rental fee for your cable modem. But you can save that rental fee by buying a modem of your own.

For example, if you have Comcast cable Internet, you’re probably paying $7 per month just to rent their modem. That’s $84 per year!

A better alternative in my opinion is to tell your cable company to keep their modem and buy your own!

The modem that I use and recommend is the Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem and Wi-Fi N Router. (#ad)

This is an exceptional cable modem/wireless router combo that’s currently selling on Amazon for about $100.  [Read more…]
