Q&A: Is it worthwhile to double the RAM when buying a new laptop?

Posted on April 20, 2018

(#ad)

Question from Ashley L:  I’m getting ready to buy a new laptop and the model I’m wanting comes with 4GB of DDR4 RAM but I can add 4GB more (for 8GB total) for an extra $75.

I have two questions for you concerning the RAM options:

1 – Do you think doubling the RAM to 8GB is worth it for Windows 10?

2 – Is $75 a reasonable price to pay for an extra 4GB?

Thanks in advance for your advice. It’ll be a big help!

Q&A: How can I change the temperature back to Fahrenheit in the Windows 10 ‘Weather’ app?

Posted on April 14, 2018

Question from Micha V.:  I love the “Weather” app in Windows 10 but I seem to have messed it up somehow.

For some reason it’s started showing the current temperature in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit.

I must be an idiot. How can I get it switched back to Fahrenheit?

Q&A: Why won’t my PC boot up with new RAM sticks installed?

Question from Seth:  I need help with a RAM upgrade issue, Rick.

My computer came with 4GB of RAM already installed (two 2GB sticks). It has  two empty RAM slots open.

I bought two 8GB RAM sticks and installed them in the empty slots.

When I try to start up the PC with the new RAM sticks installed, I hear a beeping sound and an error message comes up on the screen.

If I remove the new RAM sticks and leave the old sticks installed the computer boots up OK.

What can be causing the computer not to boot up with the new RAM sticks installed? Thanks.

Q&A: Can I use my spare 42″ flat screen TV as a computer monitor?

Posted on April 2, 2018

lg-42-inch-tvQuestion from Nancy H.:  I just replaced the LG 42LN5400 42″ flat screen TV in my living room with a beautiful new 60″ model from Panasonic.

The LG still works great, and it has a fantastically sharp picture.

What I’d like to know is can I replace the ancient 20″ monitor that I’m using with my Gateway desktop PC with my now-spare 42″ TV? They both have HDMI ports. Thanks for your help.

Q&A: If I buy a laptop with Windows 10, can I install Windows 7 if I don’t like it?

Posted on March 25, 2018

Windows-10-logoQuestion from Sara A.:  The screen went bad in my laptop so I’m looking for a new one. I’ve been to all the local stores, and all of laptops they have come with Windows 10.

I’m used to Windows 7 and I’ve heard that Windows 10 is a lot different. If I buy a laptop with Windows 10 on it will I be able to install Windows 7 if I don’t like it? I have the Windows 7 CD that came with my old laptop.
